Deep in the Swiss Alps lies the Mines de Sel de Bex, Switzerland’s oldest active salt mine. Last week, this extraordinary location played host to the Embassy’s presentation of the equally extraordinary film The Sea Inside Us by Irish artist Ruth E Lyons.

Salt is one of the central themes in Ruth's work. Through film, sculpture and sound, she explores questions of connection, nature, history and what continues to bind us together. Having filmed in the Bex salt mine itself, this screening felt in many ways like a homecoming.

Equipped with helmets, our guests journeyed deep underground to view the film, where they also enjoyed a special live performance by traditional musicians Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde, Frances Morton and Aodhán Gavigan.

Our sincere thanks to Basel-based Irish producer Emer Lynch for her vision and dedication in bringing this project to life, and to Schweizer Salinen and Culture Ireland for their valued support.

🌊🧂 Deep beneath the Swiss Alps, where ancient salt seams tell a shared European story, a unique Irish cultural experience awaits.

Join us on 3 October 2026 at the spectacular Mines de Sel de Bex for a special screening of The Sea Inside Us, the acclaimed film by Irish artist Ruth E Lyons, accompanied by a live performance of its original score by Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde, Frances Morton and Aodhán Gavigan, in cooperation with curator Emer Lynch.

Set in the heart of a working salt mine, this event connects audiences directly with the film's subject: the vast prehistoric Zechstein Sea, whose geological legacy stretches from Ireland across Europe.

Presented by Salina Helvetica and the Embassy of Ireland in Switzerland as part of the cultural programme of Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

How European is Irish traditional music and dance? 🇪🇺 🇮🇪

Last week’s concert Tonnta na hEorpa – or Waves of Europe - celebrated the currents of connection that have shaped Ireland’s musical traditions.

Presented as part of the Embassy of Ireland’s programme for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the performance at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern highlighted how Irish music and dance have been enriched by centuries of cultural exchange across Europe, reminding us that Ireland’s traditions are part of a wider shared European story.

Ambassador McGarry welcomed partners and friends from the Irish community in Switzerland, the Swiss Federal Administration, civil society, academia, business and the diplomatic corps, as well as the many fans of Irish traditional music who joined us to celebrate Ireland’s unique place in Europe. ☘️ 🇨🇭

A heartfelt thank you to the Irish Traditional Music Archive, to the talented musicians and dancers – Liam O’Connor, Cormac Begley, Brían MacGloinn, Louise Mulcahy, Sophie Ryan, Seamas Hyland and Stephanie Keane – who brought this story to life, to our sponsors and partners – PM Group, PKZ, Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland – and to everyone who joined us for this memorable evening.
