🚀 Inaugural session of the Youth IGF AI Foresight Programme 2026!

🌍 Today, national and regional Youth IGF Coordinators and contributors to the 2026 IGF Youth Track, from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia Pacific, and the Western Europe and Others Group, came together for the first session of the Youth IGF AI Foresight Programme 2026.

🎯 The programme equips Youth IGF organizers and active contributors to Youth IGFs and the IGF Youth Track with practical foresight knowledge and workshop methodologies, to strengthen future-oriented dialogue on digital and AI governance within their local communities.

In this first session, participants learned how to:
🔮 Distinguish between predicting the future and exploring possible futures
📡 Recognize signals, trends and assumptions, and identify the key uncertainties shaping the future of AI governance
💡 Understand futures thinking as a mindset, and foresight as a tool to apply

🌏 A busy week in Kathmandu, Nepal: the IGF Secretariat joined the Asia Pacific Youth IGF, the Asia Pacific Regional IGF, and a consultative session with Nepal's Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ms. Sobita Gautam. 🇳🇵

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗣𝗿𝗜𝗚𝗙 (𝟯–𝟰 𝗢𝗰𝘁) 🎙️
The 16th edition gathered ~90 onsite and 120 online, joined through 11 remote hubs across 8 countries, under the theme "From Users to Stakeholders: Youth Shaping Resilient and Rights-Based Digital Futures."

We also hosted the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗜𝗚𝗙 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝗜 on AI content moderation, digging into a real gap: how AI handles low-resource languages, local slang, and cultural context, and how users, platforms, and policymakers can avoid the over- and under-moderation that cause harm. Participants closed by reporting concrete recommended actions back to plenary.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 🤝
Young people from the Youth IGF Nepal community presented collective input to the Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs of the Government of Nepal, Ms. Sobita Gautam, on the digital challenges they face, backed by a policy brief from 25 contributors. The IGF Secretariat commended this consultative session as a model of youth–policymaker collaboration, and invited the Minister to the global IGF in Nairobi, Kenya (14–18 Dec).

𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗚𝗙 (𝟰–𝟳 𝗢𝗰𝘁) 🌐
Four days and ~200 onsite participants under the theme "Safeguarding a Resilient Internet in Times of Crisis." In her opening remarks, IGF MAG Chair Jennifer Chung commended stakeholders from the region on their active engagement, noting one of APrIGF's largest editions yet. She also highlighted how strong engagment from national and regional IGF's is key to connecting local perspectives to global digital policy discussions and processes.

On 2 October, the IGF Secretariat joined the Youth IGF Nepal in Kathmandu to help strengthen the voice of young people in Internet governance. 🌐

💡 Under the theme "Shaping the future of Internet Governance Together," around 100 participants came together, with opening remarks from IGF MAG Chair, Jennifer Chung. 🎤

🗣️ The IGF Secretariat spoke on why national Youth IGFs matter: they carry the perspectives of local youth communities into the global IGF and wider digital governance processes, helping ensure that local voices are represented in the policy discussions shaping our digital future.

🚀 Now in its fifth year, the Youth IGF Nepal initiative continues to empower young people at the crossroads of technology, governance, and society, through its interactive forum, capacity-building workshops, and fellowships that strengthen their role in driving Nepal's digital future.

Internet Governance Labs (IG Labs) examine how emerging technologies may reshape the use of the Internet and its governance. The 2026 pilot in Nairobi takes on its first workstream: AI and the Internet.

In December 2025, the United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 80/173 on the twenty-year review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20), decided to make the IGF a permanent forum of the United Nations. As the IGF enters this new chapter, its Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) will continue to play a central role in shaping the programme of its annual meetings.

On behalf of the UN Secretary-General, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) invites all stakeholder and regional groups to submit nominations to renew the MAG for 2027.

🌍 Introducing the Youth IGF AI Foresight Programme 2026!

The IGF and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, is launching a four-session programme to build strategic foresight skills within the Youth IGF community.

🎯 The goal: equip Youth IGF organizers and contributors with practical foresight tools so they can bring forward-looking thinking on digital and AI governance back to their local Youth IGF meetings.

👥 41 selected participants, representing national and regional Youth IGFs across the globe.

🗓️ Starting October 2026:
Three online sessions unpack futures literacy, driver-mapping, and strategic thinking applied to AI governance, followed by a hybrid session at the Global IGF in December.

🎥 In an interview with UN News during last week's UNGA81, the IGF-affiliated UN Global Advocate for Human-centric Digital Governance, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, poses a timely question: "Do we want AI models that are making maximum money for the businesses that build them, or do we want AI models that do the most good for the people that use them?"

It's a question the whole world is grappling with, and the goal, increasingly, is to align the two. Building AI takes real investment in research, infrastructure, and the capital and people behind it. Yet AI's impact on society is unlike any product before it, which calls for a new balance between commercial success and social responsibility.

That balance can't be struck by any one actor alone. Business, government, civil society, and the technical community each hold part of the answer. The UN and the IGF exist to bring them together, to share best practices, air differing views, and find common ground that supports both digital innovation and the people technologies touch.
