Arta Brending, Mercuria’s Head of North American Human Resources, joined Megan Baird from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship at the Swiss Embassy to the United States ahead of the annual Soirée Suisse.

Together with other Swiss companies, Mercuria participated in a high-level roundtable on apprenticeships to share insights on expanding workforce development programs in the U.S. and reducing administrative hurdles.

At Mercuria, we’ve been following the and the closely. We’re excited to see the incredible progress both crews have made!

The FOREL team has been busy these last few weeks. They’ve begun environmental DNA (eDNA) plankton sampling, a non-invasive biodiversity monitoring technique. This characterizes the biodiversity present including everything from marine mammals to bacteria. Through further testing, like with a Planktoscope, they can compare life between two different Greenland fjords, giving them insight into the impact of glaciers on the biodiversity there.

The Ocean Science Expedition crew has seen their first iceberg, navigated a “growler graveyard” of contorted ice shapes in the water, and were greeted by seals in Nuuk. Like the FOREL team, they’ve begun eDNA testing to paint a better picture of the biodiversity in the Arctic. After spending 6 days in Nuuk learning about the local Indigenous Inuit culture, the crew set off and officially crossed the Arctic Circle. After reaching Disko Bay, they began data collection and underwater acoustics recording. They will continue to explore the area and the Greenland coastline.

We’re excited to see what comes next for these exceptional crews as they navigate the high seas! Make sure to follow their journeys to keep up with their discoveries as they continue on across the Arctic.
