🌏 Strengthening Disaster Resilience Across the Pacific

Emergency Management Cook Islands (EMCI) is proud to be part of the Pacific Regional Disaster Managers Meeting 2026, held in Coral Coast, Fiji.

Representing the Cook Islands is a strong national delegation:

* EMCI Director - John Strickland
* EMCI Senior Technical Coordinator - Stephano Rampling-Tou
* EMCI BSRP-II Coordinator - Charles Carlson
* Cook Islands Fire Chief - Breamnt Kea
* Cook Islands Police Inspector - Leighton Boaza

This reflects a coordinated, multi-agency approach. Bringing together leadership, technical capability, and frontline response agencies.

This regional meeting is a critical platform for the Cook Islands. It allows us to strengthen partnerships, share innovations, and enhance preparedness, particularly through GEDSI (Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion) and stronger engagement with civil society, ensuring inclusive and community informed disaster management.

Key regional programmes discussed include:

🔹 Pacific Humanitarian Warehousing Programme (PHWP)
Supporting pre-positioning of emergency supplies across the Pacific to enable faster, more efficient response, critical for remote Pa Enua and outer island resilience.

🔹 Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific (BSRP-II)
Strengthening infrastructure, building standards, and risk-informed planning to reduce disaster impacts and support safer communities.

🔹 Pacific Islands Emergency Management Alliance (PIEMA)
Enhancing professional development, training, and leadership across Pacific disaster management agencies, building a stronger, more capable regional workforce.

🔹 Pacific Islands Fire and Emergency Services Association (PIFESA)
Strengthening fire and emergency response coordination, capability, and interoperability across the region.

For the Cook Islands, engagement in these initiatives is essential. They directly support our national priorities, strengthening coordination, improving response capability, and ensuring our systems are inclusive, resilient, and fit for purpose.

Working together as one Pacific! Stronger, Safer, and more inclusive.

Meitaki to SPC and our international partners for your coordination and support in making this possible.

Ke Ola from Nassau!

EMCI staff Stephano and Sam recently made the trip to Nassau, meeting with households and carrying out our community surveys as well as conducting evacuation drills. We also had a great session presenting to the community and talking about hazards, preparedness, and how this information will be used.

The information collected will help support better preparedness and planning for Nassau, and also provide strong data to support future projects and funding proposals that can benefit the island.

Atawai Wolo to the Nassau community for the warm welcome and for taking the time to take part in the surveys. Special thanks as well to our local Nassau surveyors, Kiteia and Te Momua, for their support in helping carry out the work on the island.

Meitaki Maata also to GCF and UNEP for making this possible

Check out the video to see what we got up to.

Yesterday’s powerful sea surges battered the Cook Islands, damaging coastal areas and putting local businesses and communities on high alert. Grateful for everyone staying safe — let’s continue to look out for each other.

The latest update from Cook Islands Meteorological Service

25/01/2026

We have observed some online messages and social media posts incorrectly referring to this weather event as a “Hurricane Warning.” This information is not correct and is not wording distributed by EMCI.

At the same time, we acknowledge and encourage the public’s proactive approach to preparedness. As we are currently within the cyclone season, it is appropriate for households and communities to remain vigilant and prepared.

We urge everyone to rely on the latest official weather bulletin by the Cook Islands Meteorological Service for accurate and up to date information.
