A Rainforest Icon

Meet one of Costa Rica’s most recognizable birds: the Yellow-throated Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus), a stunning resident of the tropical forests surrounding Manuel Antonio.

With its vibrant yellow throat and impressive bill, this rainforest ambassador is impossible to miss. Although its beak appears heavy, it is surprisingly lightweight, helping the toucan reach fruit on thin branches that cannot support its body weight.

Toucans play an important role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers. By feeding on fruits and traveling through the forest, they help regenerate and maintain the rich biodiversity that makes Costa Rica so unique.

When exploring the trails of Manuel Antonio, keep your eyes on the treetops. A flash of yellow and black among the leaves may reveal one of the rainforest’s most colorful inhabitants.

A Silent Predator

Meet one of Costa Rica’s most impressive reptiles: the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), a powerful and fascinating resident of the rivers, estuaries, and mangroves surrounding Manuel Antonio.

Perfectly adapted for life in the water, crocodiles can remain nearly motionless for long periods, with only their eyes and nostrils visible above the surface. This stealthy behavior allows them to observe their surroundings while conserving energy.

Despite their prehistoric appearance, crocodiles are highly evolved predators that have existed for millions of years. Their strong tails, excellent eyesight, and remarkable patience make them masters of their environment.

When exploring mangroves and riverbanks, keep an eye on the water's surface. What looks like a floating log may actually be a crocodile quietly watching the world go by.

A Nose for Adventure

Meet one of the rainforest’s most curious and adaptable mammals: the White-nosed Coati (Nasua narica), a common and fascinating resident of Manuel Antonio National Park.

Known for its long, flexible snout, ringed tail, and remarkable agility, the pizote is always on the move. Using its nose to search through leaves, soil, and fallen branches, it feeds on fruits, insects, eggs, and other small food sources found throughout the forest.

Pizotes are highly social animals. Females and young often travel together in groups, while adult males are usually more solitary. Their sharp claws and strong sense of smell make them excellent explorers of the rainforest floor.

When walking through the forest, look carefully among the leaves and under the trees. You may spot a pizote searching for its next meal, or confidently crossing your path as if it owns the jungle.
