Nearly a thousand Jewish refugees boarded river barges on the Danube hoping to reach Palestine, and the war caught up with them before they ever left Europe. This is one of the lesser-known tragedies within Holocaust remembrance, a story that rarely gets told alongside the more famous rescue voyages.

Beginning in late 1939, the Kladovo-Sabac transport carried Jewish refugees, many of them from Austria and Germany, down the Danube into Yugoslavia, where they became stranded for months and eventually over a year, waiting on a British immigration certificate that never fully materialized. Most of the group was still in Yugoslavia when the N**i invasion arrived in 1941, and the majority of those stranded refugees did not survive the war.

It's a painful reminder of how close so many came to escaping, only to be stopped by circumstance rather than capture. Had you ever come across the story of the Kladovo transport before today?
