Meanwhile, the latest novels by Iida Turpeinen 🇫🇮 and Robert Zola Christensen 🇩🇰 explore themes of science. You can meet them all at the Book World (Svět knihy) programme — and today, at the joint reception, they had the chance to meet their translators, publishers, and other Czech friends of literature! 🫶

Today is Europe Day! 🇪🇺 Here are five ways the EU has made a real difference in everyday life for its citizens:

🎓 Education without borders – over 10 million people have studied across Europe thanks to Erasmus+, the EU programme supporting education, training, youth and sport.

📱 No roaming charges – people can use mobile phones and online services across the EU without extra costs, thanks to abolished roaming fees.

💼 Freedom of movement – EU citizens are free to live, work or study in any EU country. Certain conditions apply.

🔋USB-C for all – new portable electronic devices sold in the EU must use USB‑C charging. A shared charging standard makes life simpler for consumers.

💶 Stronger consumer rights – laws ensure the same rights for consumers across all member states, including a 14‑day withdrawal period for online purchases and the right to complain about faulty goods.

Sweden 🇸🇪 joined the EU in 1995 after a referendum, but has kept its own currency, the Swedish krona (SEK). Swedish is also one of the EU’s 24 official languages.

The European Union began with the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950 – a plan to secure lasting peace in post‑war Europe. 📜
