We support the realisation of ideas to accelerate climate action in Europe | By BMUKN

The European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUKN) was launched in 2017. Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen intra-European cooperation on climate action. To date, EUKI has supported 232 cross-border climate projects and built an active network comprising 459 organisations across 31 European countries.

How do you power a school with renewables? 🔋 EUKI project Ready4NetZero shows the way

The energy consumption in buildings accounts for more than 40% of total energy consumption in EU countries. Within the building sector, educational buildings account for a significant share.

This is where EUKI project Ready4NetZero stepped in. The project helped a Croatian school install a heat pump and a 25 kW photovoltaic system. The harvested solar energy alone can cover 20% of a school's energy consumption per year. ☀️

🔋 From consumer to prosumer: This is what it needs ⬇️

Across Europe, more and more households are becoming prosumers. They produce clean energy with technologies such as rooftop solar panels while also using this electricity themselves.

The potential is huge. In Romania, 228,350 prosumers are already generating their own electricity. In Czechia, 26 GW of renewable energy is waiting to connect to the grid. That’s 12 times the output of the Temelín nuclear power plant. Some electricity grids cannot keep up. Also Poland’s ageing distribution network struggles to keep pace with growing renewable energy generation.

This shows how important modern electricity grids are for Europe’s energy transition. Stronger grids can help more households produce clean energy, reduce energy costs and benefit from the transition.

The European Grids Package offers an opportunity to accelerate this transformation. It directs investments to where it is needed most and aims to ensure that all communities are included.

Energy poverty won’t be solved by rooftop solar panels alone. But giving everyone fair access to a modern, flexible grid can help make clean energy work for more people.

💬 What if one of the most effective tools for advancing the green transition is simply… dialogue? This new EUKI interview...

… explores what can happen when cities guide each other through shared experiences, perspectives and solutions.

🏙️ Here’s the story:
In the EUKI project Strategic Approach to Green Transition (SAGT), the municipality of , Slovenia, supported the development of the strategic guidelines for a Green Transition Strategy in , Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For Tuzla, where air pollution has been a major challenge for decades, the need for change was particularly pressing. Through collaborative dialogue with Maribor, Tuzla became the first city in Bosnia and Herzegovina to approach the green transition on a strategic level. 🌱

🗨️ "The best proof of successful knowledge transfer is that Tuzla didn't just adopt our experience – they built on it and made it their own", Nuša Lazar Koprivnik, Consultant, Dekorina d.o.o., consultant to the city Maribor.

In return the project not only helped shape Tuzla’s Green Transition Strategy, it also paved the way for collaboration as a two-way street. 🤝

🗨️ “Although Maribor was the good practice holder, and those practices were transferred to Tuzla, there were case studies in Tuzla as well, that Maribor was very interested in,” Borut Jurišić, project Coordinator from the Regional Development Agency of Podravje in Maribor, tells us.

💡How to reduce dependence on fossil fuels through effective social-climate measures 👇

How did Central and Eastern European countries respond to high energy prices? EUKI project Monitor reports:

Cushioning the social impact of high fuel prices is a challenge across Europe, so is finding ways to do so while keeping climate goals in view.

To better understand how to address this challenge, EUKI project ClimateFair Monitor examined the effects of the 2026 fuel price shock across six Central and Eastern European countries, bringing together experiences from Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Slovenia.

Their findings highlight common challenges in policy design:

🔹 Fuel tax cuts and price caps helped cushion high prices, but also reduced incentives to save energy and switch to cleaner alternatives.

🔹 Broad-based measures did not always reach those most in need.

🔹 At the same time, countries implemented short-term measures to reduce fossil fuel dependency and address social inequalities, offering valuable lessons to learn from.

☀️ Why one balcony stands out! One tenant, one EUKI project and significantly more energy independence 👇

For Migle Maniusyte in Vilnius two solar panels on her balcony railing bring her a great deal of more energy independence!

On sunny days they generate four to five kilowatt-hours, enough to run her appliances and cut her grid consumption by up to 50 per cent.

Her example inspired four neighbours to follow.

Through the EUKI project SUNRISE, balcony solar became an actual path to secure clean energy for apartment residents in Bulgaria, Lithuania and North Macedonia, and the follow-up project SUN BOX is scaling it further.

The draft federal budget and the 2027 business plan for the Climate and Transformation Fund, as agreed by the Cabinet, provide for a substantial reduction in funding from the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) by 2030. Ongoing projects can be fully funded as planned. Parliament is expected to decide on the 2027 federal budget in November 2026.

🏢 🚘 ETS2 is moving towards implementation. What can we learn and address along the way? 👇

Our latest EUKI Academy web seminar, organised in collaboration with EUKI project ClimateFair Monitor, brought together different experts to analyse how the ETS2 implementation is developing and what is needed for the implementation to be just.

Milena Damianova from the European Commission shared, that many Member States worked closely with the Commission in the implementation process. ETS2 implementation was further strengthened, she pointed out. The Commission works towards early ETS2 auctions from January 2027. Jonas Sonnenschein, deputy director of Umanotera showed that the implementation is lagging behind. National Social Climate Plans are behind schedule.

Sonnenschein underlined the need for targeted measures that address inequalities without weakening the transition. Katalin Tarr, policy officer at Levegő Munkacsoport highlighted how energy prices, and political campaigns about them, impact public perception on climate policies like ETS2. She recommends raising awareness for the benefits of ETS2.

💡 The discussion also showed that the preparation for ETS2 is already generating valuable knowledge. In Bulgaria, for example, data collected ahead of implementation is helping to better understand transport poverty and the effects of energy and transport costs on households.

👉 These perspectives show that preparing for ETS2 is about more than introducing a carbon price. It is also learning from evidence and strengthening social support as Europe moves towardsthe ETS2 implementation.

🏘️ 🤝 Affordable homes and the energy transition can and must go hand in hand: The new briefing from the EUKI project A+ Approach to Enhance Energy Transition shows how 👇

Europe is looking for ways to make housing more affordable while improving energy efficiency. Countries face both shared and different challenges, making well-aligned European housing and climate policies essential to address needs on the ground.

The briefing takes a closer look at where challenges still lie and, importantly: explores how Latvia, Poland and the Czech Rebublic already implemented successful renovation programmes that provided targeted support and local energy solutions to make housing more energy-efficient and accessible.

The briefing turns these experiences into practical insights for policymakers, public authorities and civil society, showing how future funding programmes and policy design can be done.

What Does Fair Climate Transition Actually Look Like?

ETS2 (carbon pricing on heating and transport) enters 2028, raising energy costs for millions. The Social Climate Fund protects vulnerable households from these higher costs.

But only if countries design their strategies carefully.

A+ Approach examined how 8 countries are developing their plans to support vulnerable households through this transition. The report reveals where countries are making progress and where stronger action is needed.
