Right-wing Flávio Bolsonaro has won the first round of Brazil's presidential election. He has has 47 per cent to left-wing President Lula da Silva's 45 per cent of the vote. They will face each other in a runoff on 25 October.

A great deal is at stake both domestically and for the Latin American region as a whole. Brazilians must decide if their country – like so many others in Latin America – will fall under Donald Trump’s hegemonic control, potentially taking the entire continent back to its former status of America’s Backyard.

For over two weeks, up to 450,000 students across France have protested teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings. Teachers, parents, university students and trade unions have since joined the mobilization.

La France insoumise (LFI), led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has emerged as a prominent political voice supporting the students’ demands and calling for broader mobilization.

The protests have caught France’s political establishment by surprise, bringing youth discontent to the forefront ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Could the protests spark a broader social movement?

Three years ago today, the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas launched a coordinated large-scale attack on southern Israel.

More than 1,200 people were killed, including around 800 civilians and 36 children. More than 4,000 people were injured, and 251 were taken hostage and abducted to the Gaza Strip.

The attack also marked the beginning of the genocide in Gaza carried out by the Israeli government and military.

Gil Shohat, West Asia Programme Manager at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Berlin, headed the Foundation’s Israel Office in Tel Aviv from March 2023 to August 2026.

In an interview with neues deutschland, he reflects on his time in Israel, October 7 and the trauma it caused, as well as the brutalization and militarization of Israeli society, the dehumanization of Palestinians, the role of the media, the upcoming parliamentary elections, and the importance of Jewish-Palestinian alliances on the ground: https://www.rosalux.de/en/news/id/55300/israels-logic-of-violence-cant-be-overcome-from-within

90 years ago, thousands of Londoners took to the streets to stop Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists from marching through the East End.

On 4 October 1936, around 3,000 members of the BUF gathered near the Tower of London. Known as the “Blackshirts” for their uniforms, Mosley’s fascist movement modelled itself partly on Mussolini’s Fascists in Italy. They planned to march through Whitechapel, home to a large Jewish community. Amid poverty and economic insecurity, the BUF sought support by scapegoating Jewish residents for the area’s problems.

But the fascists never made it into Whitechapel. Jewish residents, Irish dock workers, communists, socialists, trade unionists and other East Enders came together to block their route. Barricades made from furniture, mattresses and other materials went up around Cable Street. Protesters clashed with police attempting to clear a path for the Blackshirts.

Eventually, the police called off the march and Mosley’s fascists were forced to turn back.

The Battle of Cable Street became a defining moment in British anti-fascist history. Some of those who resisted Mosley would go on to join the International Brigades fighting Franco in Spain.

What happens when organized crime is treated as terrorism?

The US has designated Brazil’s two largest criminal groups, PCC and Comando Vermelho, as terrorist organizations. Researcher Ana Penido argues that the problem lies not in recognizing the scale and consequence of organized crime, but in choosing the appropriate tools to tackle it.

In our interview, she discusses the shift from public security to a logic of war, US influence on Latin American security policies, and the consequences for civil rights and national sovereignty: https://www.rosalux.de/en/news/id/55234/criminals-or-terrorists-us-security-policy-in-latin-america

Europe wants to become an 'AI continent' and strengthen its digital sovereignty. But as investment in AI infrastructure accelerates, existing technological and economic dependencies may take on new forms.

Sandra Sieron looks beyond AI models to the global supply chains behind them, from chips, cloud computing and critical minerals to energy and labour. The article also examines the EU’s AI Act and deregulation agenda, initiatives such as InvestAI, the growing role of private capital, and the social and ecological costs that risk being sidelined in the race for AI innovation.

For Rosa Luxemburg, war was difficult to avoid in the imperialist stage of capitalist modernity. Yet this did not stop her from fighting against the threat of war, even at the cost of imprisonment. She opposed violence and war not only on ethical grounds, but also as a revolutionary.

Luxemburg linked the growing militarization of the great powers to the expansion of the world economy and intensifying competition on the world market. She later developed this argument further in 'The Accumulation of Capital' (1913): as capitalism expanded into ever more regions, competition among the major powers intensified, making war increasingly likely.
