Individual women from Kenya and Germany have come together to look into how the commercialised flower industry started in Kenya decades ago has affected the workers and the communities living around these areas. When the flower industry started, it was seen as an economical boost to the economy and a way of reducing poverty because of the job opportunities it presented. Decades down the line, this industry has become one of the deadliest human catastrophe and poverty-stricken area.

One can ask why this, knowing that the flower industry is the fifth economy earning export industry in Kenya and also how expensive it is to buy a bunch of flowers especially roses in Europe and other countries. To answer this, one has to look at capitalism in terms of exploitation of labour, natural resources eg. the fresh waters and use/disposal of chemicals used for the growing of the roses.

The women who are the majority of those working in the flower industry are the ones who are mostly affected by these adversities. Due to health problems which are caused by these chemicals they end up sick with cancer, loosing babies and jobs at the same time. Talking to some of these women, one can understand the type of misery they are going through. It does not matter if one is working in the so called “fair trade” farms, the capitalism and corruptions rule this world.

This is why a few of us have decided to bring awareness to those who buy and enjoy flowers, how they are affecting the ones who are working in the industry. We all enjoy flowers and we will keep enjoying them, but let us see how we can help the women who are working in this industry to get proper working clothes and conditions, good wages, medical covers and most of all make the companies answerable to the climate issues being caused by their unreasonable use of fresh water and disposal of the chemical they are using.

It is an open secret that the capitalist owning the flower industry will take advantage of those living in poverty as long as they make their profits but when the profits start dwindling, they will move on. This is happening already and it is a sad affair because they are moving to another African country where they are selling their propaganda of helping the communities and the country with economical benefits but in reality it is all about the capitalist gains.
