๐Ÿค Recently, we welcomed Dr. Jeong-Yeon Hwang from Fraunhofer ISIT at our company in Halle (Saale).

We met to go through the results of "Size Is Important 2", a project at Fraunhofer ISIT in which filters for micro- and nanoplastic analysis in the sub-micron range are developed and tested. We are not a project partner, but we are closely involved in the singulation processes, and we are interested in bringing the resulting filters to market.

Together with Dr. Hardik Vaghasiya, Dr. Monika Lelonek and Dr. Piotr Pawlik from our team, we discussed the results in person and talked through the next steps of our cooperation. Jeong-Yeon also got a closer look at our technology and products, which will make future work together easier.

We have a number of joint plans: exploring new products and solutions for our customers.

Thank you, Jeong-Yeon, for the open exchange and for making the trip to Halle.

We also look forward to her talk at our Micro- and Nanoplastic Workshop on 12โ€“13 November.

Registration is open until 15 October: https://lnkd.in/dPEGGh8t

โ›ณ Last week, the SmartMembranes team traded lab coats for golf clubs โ€” well, most of us tried.

We started with a short beginner's session, learning grips, stances and just enough patience not to lose every ball in the rough within the first ten minutes. Some people found a surprising talent; most of us did not, which only made the afternoon round of footgolf a fair rematch โ€” no clubs required, just a football and a lot less dignity.

By evening, we swapped the course for the dinner table. No agenda, no slides, just good food and the kind of conversation that doesn't happen during a normal workday.

Days like this aren't really about golf, or football, or even dinner. What stays with me is how well this team works together โ€” people from different countries, different backgrounds, sitting around the same table, pulling in the same direction. In a year that has asked a lot from everyone, that isn't something we take for granted.

Protein bars and apples on the office table. A small start โ€” but a conscious one. ๐ŸŽ

Honestly, I didnโ€™t always think much about this. But somewhere along the way, you start to notice that how you feel affects how you work, how you think, and how you show up for the people around you.

At SmartMembranes, weโ€™re taking small steps toward looking after ourselves a little better. Healthier snacks in the office, and soon โ€” doing some sport together as a team.

But thereโ€™s a bigger picture here too.

We work in microplastics analysis. We know what the research shows โ€” microplastics have been found in human blood, in organs, in tissue. Thatโ€™s not something we can fully reverse. But itโ€™s something we can slow down, by understanding it better, measuring it more precisely, and ultimately reducing plastic where we can.

Our filters are part of that work. And so are our customers in medical technology and environmental research, who rely on accurate analysis to understand whatโ€™s happening โ€” and to find answers.

Health is personal. But itโ€™s also a topic that connects what we do every day with something much larger.

Most of our team is young. Iโ€™m not waiting until they feel the same way I do now to make it a topic. If we can build awareness โ€” and good habits โ€” early, thatโ€™s something worth doing.

It starts with an apple. Or a protein bar, if you prefer. ๐Ÿ˜„

Monday was a great day. ๐ŸŽ“

Our colleague Hardik Vaghasiya successfully defended his PhD in physics at Martin-Luther-Universitรคt Halle-Wittenberg โ€” and we were there to see it.
His talk on surface modifications by ultrashort laser pulses was impressive, and the way he handled the examiners' questions showed exactly how deeply he understands his field. It was a pleasure to watch.
After the defense, we celebrated together โ€” some nice, relaxed time with his friends and colleagues.

We're genuinely glad to have Hardik and his expertise with us. His work is directly connected to what we're building at SmartMembranes: a new product line of silicon filters manufactured through laser structuring โ€” the LasePor filters. A real addition to what we can offer.

Congratulations, Dr. Vaghasiya. Well deserved. ๐Ÿ‘

And that's a wrap on the IVAM Hightech Summit in Leiden. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑโ˜€๏ธ

What a couple of days. Familiar faces, new connections, and the kind of conversations that stick with you long after the conference is over.

The venue itself โ€” Corpus Experience in Leiden โ€” was a highlight on its own. Between sessions, we got to explore the exhibition on the human body. A fascinating detour from microtechnology talks, and a good reminder that understanding what happens at the smallest scales matters far beyond the lab. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

And then the evening: a small business dinner, and a sunset over the North Sea that I wasn't expecting to be quite so beautiful. Moments like that don't make it onto the agenda โ€” but they're often what you remember most. ๐ŸŒ…

I'll also say this: the Dutch have a way of making everything just a little more pleasant. Even the bus ride was full of friendliness and helpfulness. It's a small thing โ€” but it says a lot about a place and its people.

Holland, until next time. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Weโ€™re live at SETAC 2026 in Maastricht! ๐ŸŽ‰

Yesterday we set up our booth and joined the opening reception โ€” already a great start with first catch-ups with friends and partners. The best conferences really do begin before they officially open! ๐Ÿ˜Š

From today until Thursday, youโ€™ll find us at booth #92 at MECC Maastricht. Weโ€™re here to talk microplastics analysis, share our latest filtration units and filter technologies, and โ€” most importantly โ€” connect with the people doing the important work in this field.
If youโ€™re here at SETAC, please come by. Weโ€™d love to meet you in person!

Something we've been working on for a while is finally taking shape. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Microplastics and nanoplastics are everywhere โ€” in our water, our air, our food. And while the research community is making great progress, one thing remains clear: we still have more questions than answers.

That's exactly why we're organizing a workshop dedicated to just that.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Microplastics in urban fountains โ€“ an underestimated problem.

A new study, published together with Czฤ™stochowa University of Technology, reveals: microplastics are found everywhere in urban fountains โ€“ from Gliwice and Rybnik to Halle (Saale), Germany.

The findings are interesting:
โ†’ Up to 110 particles per liter measured in Polish cities
โ†’ Significantly lower levels in Halle โ€“ local conditions make the difference
โ†’ Fibers, fragments, pellets, and foils โ€“ every fountain tells its own story

๐—ช๐—ต๐˜† ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€:
Urban fountains are publicly accessible, directly exposed โ€“ and largely unstudied. They reflect what is happening in our urban environment.

๐—ข๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ:
Precise analysis starts with the right filter. Our silicon membranes enable reliable detection of microplastic particles โ€“ including sub-micron ranges โ€“ and form the foundation for trustworthy research results like these.
Science needs reliable methods. We provide them. ๐Ÿ’ก
