Today, I received one of the answers I have been looking for , for a long time.

Three years ago, while I was going through one of the most difficult periods of my life, I wrote a book examining Ethiopia’s longstanding political, economic, and institutional patterns of exclusion. In that book, I argued that Ethiopia needed to move beyond a system in which certain communities felt excluded from the state and toward a state in which every Ethiopian could feel a genuine sense of belonging.

At the time, I saw a glimmer of hope that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed could become a leader capable of addressing some of these longstanding challenges and helping Ethiopia move toward greater inclusion.

Today, I see a stronger sign that this vision is moving in that direction. And tomorrow, we remain hopeful as we wait for further signs of inclusive representation, including the possibility of additional ministerial appointments. The Ethiopia we should strive for is a state that belongs to all Ethiopians, where opportunity, representation, dignity, and national responsibility are not determined by identity or background.

For me, today is not simply about a political appointment or a single decision. It is a reminder of the idea I wrote about three years ago: that Ethiopia’s future depends on building an inclusive state in which every citizen can say, with confidence, “This country belongs to me too.”
