GESIS Panel Our entire data is also accessible for secondary data analyses.

We offer you unique opportunities for collecting your own high-quality survey data free of charge with either the representative GESIS Panel.pop or the GESIS Panel.dbd linked to web tracking. The GESIS Panel offers the social science community a unique opportunity to collect survey data from a representative sample of the German population free of charge. Data collected within the GESIS Panel will be available for both primary researchers fielding their own studies and secondary researchers. The mixed-mode self-administered surveys (web-based surveys and mail surveys) are fielded on a bi-monthly basis with each wave consisting of two major parts: About fifteen minutes of survey time is reserved for the studies submitted by primary researchers. The second part of each survey wave (about five minutes of interviewing time) includes longitudinal core study topics developed by GESIS.

Want to know how GESIS Panel data can help us better understand how people feel about surveys?

Then join us for the first GESIS Panel Research Spotlight on October 7, 2026, at 3:00 pm!
For our first talk, Matthias Penker from the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna will present his research on:

“Changes in general survey attitudes over the course of a panel study: investigating the impact of survey experiences”

Using data from the GESIS Panel.pop Population Sample, he looks at how general attitudes toward surveys develop over time and whether people's previous survey experiences play a role in shaping these attitudes.
The talk offers an interesting perspective on how survey participation itself may be connected to the way people perceive surveys and what this can tell us about the broader survey climate.

The new lecture series, "GESIS Panel Research Spotlights", hosted by the GESIS Panel team gives selected research projects that use GESIS Panel data a platform. In regular intervals, researchers will present their projects in online lectures. This provides exciting insights into the various application possibilities of the extensive GESIS Panel data.

The series kicks off on October 7, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. with Matthias Penker. He is going to present his research on changes in general survey attitudes over the course of a panel study, examining the impact of survey experiences. He used GESIS Panel.pop data for his research.
Further details about the talk, as well as registration, are available at the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/xzcx-pBZSzOgkIHJRkRxlQ

A new GESIS Panel.dbd dataset is now available, containing three survey waves collected around the time of the 2025 German federal election — two waves before and one wave after, with 5,599 respondents participating in each of the three waves.

Among other topics, respondents were asked about their
• voting intentions and behavior,
• chancellor candidate preferences,
• party preferences,
• trust in political institutions,
• populist attitudes,
• and affective polarization towards supporters of different parties in the German political landscape.

With its rich demographic information, this dataset enables in-depth analyses of political attitudes and behavior. For example, comparing pre-election voting intentions versus reported voting behavior.
Check out the chart:
The plot displays pre-election voting intentions versus reported voting behavior of GESIS Panel.dbd respondents regarding the 2025 German federal election.

Voting patterns are most stable at the political extremes: 87% of those who intended to vote for The Left stayed with their decision, as did 82% of those who intended to vote for the AfD.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, voting patterns were least stable among BSW and FDP supporters, with around half of those who intended to vote for either party ending up voting for another one.

Last month, the GESIS Panel Team participated in the 18th Workshop of Panel Surveys in German-speaking countries. The workshop provided an inspiring forum for exchange among researchers working with panel data and a valuable opportunity to share experiences across different survey infrastructures.

The GESIS Panel Team also contributed with a poster presented by Dr. Patricia Hadler, Dr. Charlotte Löb and Dr. Steffen Pötzschke on the implementation and documentation of research ethics principles in the GESIS Panel.pop Population Sample.
They addressed
🔹 the application of RatSWD-based ethical guidelines,
🔹 challenges in documenting ethical standards in ongoing panel surveys,
🔹 and the transferability of this approach to other survey programs.

In addition, Katharina Kraft presented our documentation infrastructure for the GESIS Panel.dbd Digital Behavioral Data Sample, including an R Shiny-based interface that brings together codebooks, wave reports, and other documentation sources in one place. The presentation focused on the practical advantages and limitations of this open-source solution.

We are grateful for the inspiring discussions and the opportunity to exchange experiences with colleagues from many different panel studies. Many thanks to the FReDA Panel and the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) for the excellent organization of this year’s workshop!
