Stephen Harper, 22nd Prime Minister of Canada Founded in 1983, the IDU provides a forum in which Parties holding similar beliefs can come together and exchange views of matters of policy and organisational interest, to learn from each other, act together, establish contacts and speak with one strong voice to promote democracy and centre-right policies around the globe. Founder Members of the IDU included Britain’s Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, then US Vice-President George Bush Sr, Paris Mayor and later President of France Jacques Chirac, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and several other Party Leaders.

The IDU is deeply concerned by the escalating unrest in , where student-led protests that began in on October 13, 2026, have now spread beyond the capital. The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are cornerstones of every democratic society.

The IDU calls on the Government of Albania and its security forces to refrain from the use of violence against protesters, to exercise maximum restraint and proportionality, and to respect the fundamental rights of every citizen. Reports of rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades being deployed against crowds largely made up of students are alarming. Any instances of excessive force must be investigated independently and transparently, and those responsible held to account.

Three years ago today, on October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists carried out the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. More than 1,200 people were murdered and 251 were taken hostage.
The International Democracy Union remembers the victims, stands with their families, and honours the survivors who continue to carry the weight of that day.
The IDU and its member parties stand united against terrorism in all its forms, and against the antisemitic hatred that has risen across the world since that day. We will not allow it to be normalised in our societies. Free nations must remain resolute in defending the democratic values that terrorism seeks to destroy.

Within the country’s government, the National Alliance has steadfastly implemented centre-right policies, supporting the fight against corruption, promoting responsible economic policies, and standing up to authoritarian forces both at home and on the world stage. Today, as Moroccans vote in their General Election, the IDU sends its best wishes to our member حزب الإستقلال and its Leader, Minister Nizar Baraka, as they seek the voters’ trust to continue governing the country. The Istiqlal Party has always stood for strong centre-right principles, development, a respect for Morocco’s cultural values. Over the past 5 years, the centre-right government has delivered on this principles and boosted Morocco’s economic growth. A vote for Istiqlal is a vote to continue this progress. 🇲🇦 🗳️

The International Democracy Union strongly condemns yet another blatant act of repression by the Georgian Dream party against its political opponents. It is particularly cynical of pro-Russian oligarch Ivanishvili, who has been sabotaging Georgia’s democratic development and Euro-Atlantic integration, to arrest Giorgi Baramidze, one of United National Movement longtime leaders, on absurd charges. Mr. Baramidze has spent his whole political career advancing Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic path and bringing the country into the family of free and democratic nations. The IDU stands with ’s democratic opposition and calls for the immediate release of Giorgi Baramidze and other political prisoners in Georgia. 🇬🇪
