Structure of Trade Related Legal Issues in Denmark.

Exports of goods from Pakistan to Denmark are governed by the various trade agreements signed between EU and Pakistan. The EU and Pakistan have set up a Sub-Group on Trade to promote the development of two-way trade. The Sub-Group on Trade - set up under the auspices of the EU-Pakistan Joint Commission - is the relevant forum for discussions on trade policy developments more broadly and also aims to tackle individual market access issues which hamper trade between the two parties.

Pakistan has been benefiting from the GSP+ trading scheme, whereby many products can be exported tariff free from Pakistan to Denmark. Q- 3 Any minimum estimated amount of investment to set up a Business in Denmark?

· Minimum estimated amount of investment depends on the chosen legal entity. The smallest limited liability company in Denmark is the “anpartsselskab” (ApS) which requires 40.000 DKK. (Equivalent to PKR 880000 & U$D 5800 at the rate of 1DKK to 22PKR.

· Around 80% of the textiles and clothing articles imported to the EU from Pakistan enter the EU at a preferential tariff rate. Around a quarter of these imports are bed linen, table linen and toilet and kitchen line. Currently 0% duty is imposed on these products.

· Yes there is a possibility of B2B meetings provided the businessmen provides all details to the Embassy first, Embassy will then contact the relevant authorities/ sectors for possibility of meetings. Meetings can be held virtually.

· At times, dispute resolution mechanism is inbuilt individual contracts. All parties should read their contracts carefully before signing.

Denmark and Pakistan both follow established international law in this regard. Danish Embassy in Islamabad and Pakistan Embassy in Copenhagen could be the starting point for dispute resolution.

The Embassy of Pakistan, Copenhagen in collaboration with Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) organized a webinar at the DI headquarters on 26 June 2020. The Webinar was titled “Marketing under COVID-19: Pakistan”. More than twenty (20) Danish companies participated in the webinar.

Ambassador Ahmad Farooq made a presentation on the prospects and potential for business-related cooperation between Danish and Pakistani companies/businesses as well as Danish investment in Pakistan. In this regard he particularly highlighted Pakistan’s improvement on World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index where it had moved up by 28 places in one year to 108 from 136.

The Ambassador underscored that while the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted the global economy, the crisis also presented new opportunities which needed to be capitalized. In the case of Pakistan, there were numerous opportunities in the food production, dairy, information technology, health, textiles and logistics sectors. The Danish stakeholders were encouraged to consider these opportunities and plan beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Denmark has a long history of business relations with Pakistan. Presently over 52 Danish companies including major multinationals such as A.P. Møller/Maersk, F.L. Smidth, Beirholm, Eldan Recycling, Haldor Topsoe, Sanovo Technology, Borch Textile group, Wernerfelt Textile Company, Select A/S and KMC have business stakes in Pakistan.
