For nine months, poet Will Dowd seeded his dreams with recorded poetry from Harvard University's audio archive, then tried to capture the resulting dreams on the page.

He wore Dormio, a targeted dream incubation device from the MIT Media Lab. As he crossed into hypnagogia, the borderland between waking and sleep, it played the crackling voice of a poet. Minutes later it sounded a gong, and he groggily recounted his dream before it could fade.

Why? About twenty years ago, Dowd developed a binocular vision disorder that exiled him from the immersive pleasure of reading. Dreaming seemed to offer a remarkably close analogue.

The result is The Taste of Rain in Buenos Aires, a collection of stories drawn from those dreams.

One story was seeded by a recording of Jorge Luis Borges lecturing at Harvard in 1967. Borges once described writing as "a guided dream."

Dowd thought of himself as a "dream journalist," responsible for reporting what he had witnessed, even when it made no sense.
