We are deeply saddened by the passing of Graham McAvoy on 3 May. A visionary educator, Graham was the founder of the first British international school in Algiers and dedicated his life to creating opportunities for young people.
Having first come to Algeria in the early 1970s, he developed a deep connection to the country and played a pivotal role in strengthening educational ties between the UK and Algeria, culminating in the opening of the British School Algiers in 2020.
He will be remembered for his vision, generosity and belief in the transformative power of education. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

The UK 🇬🇧 is proud to support efforts to tackle human trafficking and migrant smuggling, crimes driven by organised criminal networks that profit from the exploitation of vulnerable people.
Around 70% of victims of human trafficking worldwide are women and girls. This stark reality underlines the vital importance of working together to better protect those at risk 🤝
Funded by the UK and implemented by UNODC, the programme “Strengthening the operational capacities of Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling Law Enforcement Units in Algeria” reflects the strong partnership between the UK 🇬🇧 and Algeria🇩🇿 , and our shared commitment to combating exploitation through cooperation, capacity‑building and the exchange of expertise.

The UK-Algeria Economic Taskforce met yesterday in London for its second meeting, building on strong foundations and an already growing economic partnership 🇬🇧 🇩🇿
Discussions focused on accelerating progress on trade & investment, deepening cooperation, and expanding practical partnerships through knowledge sharing, technology transfer and technical collaboration.
The Taskforce reaffirmed a shared commitment to work across priority sectors where UK & Algerian demand and expertise strongly complement each other - including presentations from the Office for Investment, and on the UK’s rail export capacity and expertise.
We look forward to maintaining momentum and continuing close engagement in the months ahead.
