Egypt holds one-third of the world’s ancient monuments, is the birthplace of sacred geometry in architecture, and home to living craft traditions passed down for over 5,000 years. It is also a crossroads of civilizations — from Ancient Egypt, through the Greco-Roman era and the Coptic Christian period, to the flourishing fusion of Islamic culture. We will share what we saw and experienced during a one-month art and culture journey across Egypt, uncovering stories and scenes rarely explored in depth.

📍穆卡塔姆山洞穴教堂（Cave Church of St. Simon）
✔ 位於開羅東南穆卡塔姆山岩壁內，由垃圾工社群（Zabbaleen）自力興建
✔ 可容納逾 20,000 人，是中東最大規模的教堂之一
✔ 牆面雕刻有聖經場景與科普特聖人，結合自然與信仰
✔ 教堂所在地 Zabbaleen 社區 是埃及最具代表性的回收系統與基層社群，由以科普特基督徒為主的居民組成

In our Egypt Artist Residency, we go beyond exploring ancient civilizations —
we step into architectural spaces shaped by different eras, tracing layers of faith, power, and artistic expression.

📍Cave Church of St. Simon, Mokattam Mountain
✔ Carved into the cliffs of Mokattam Mountain in Cairo, built by the local Zabbaleen community
✔ One of the largest churches in the Middle East, with a capacity of over 20,000 people
✔ Interior walls feature carvings of biblical scenes and Coptic saints, blending natural rock formations with spiritual symbolism
✔ The church is located in the Zabbaleen district, a grassroots community known for operating Cairo’s most extensive recycling system, primarily composed of Coptic Christians
✔ Coptic culture, rooted in early Egyptian Christianity, has developed a distinctive tradition of art, textiles, and religious imagery that remains deeply embedded in both spiritual and communal life

📍Mohamed Ali Palace
✔ Built in 1809 as the private residence of Mohamed Ali Pasha
✔ The palace blends Ottoman, Moorish, and Neoclassical styles — a hallmark of 19th-century royal architecture in Egypt
✔ Interiors are richly decorated with gilded murals, handcrafted tiles, and marble details
✔ Reflects how the royal court fused local and European architectural languages

In Egypt, architecture is a language — a system of symbols —
with entire civilizations etched into stone.

From the geometric patterns of Islamic mosques 🕌,
to the shimmering mosaics inside Coptic churches ✝️,
and the timeless ruins of Greco-Roman temples 🏛️.
In Siwa, architecture lives in harmony with nature,
each structure carries centuries of faith and artistry.

As part of our artist residency, we’ll be guided by a local architecture professor,
who will lead us through historical sites, helping us observe the details of each space — and respond through our own creative practice.
