سيداري يطلق الجولة الثانية من برنامجه التدريبي لبناء قدرات الكوادر البلدية الفلسطينية في إدارة المخلفات الصلبة

انطلقت بمركز البيئة والتنمية للإقليم العربي وأوروبا (سيداري) فعاليات الجولة الثانية من البرنامج التدريبي المتخصص في بناء قدرات الكوادر العاملة في البلديات والهيئات المحلية بدولة فلسطين الشقيقة في مجال الإدارة المتكاملة والمستدامة للمخلفات الصلبة، وذلك برعاية وتمويل صندوق تطوير وإقراض الهيئات المحلية - Mdlf.

وتُنفذ الجولة الثانية خلال الفترة من 4 إلى 8 أكتوبر 2026، بمشاركة 12 متدرباً من الكوادر البلدية الفلسطينية، استكمالاً للجولة الأولى التي عُقدت خلال الفترة من 20 إلى 24 سبتمبر 2026، وبالتزامن مع الاستعداد لتنفيذ الجولة الثالثة والأخيرة خلال الفترة من 11 إلى 15 أكتوبر الجاري. ويستهدف البرنامج، في مجمله، تأهيل 34 متدرباً من خلال ثلاث جولات تدريبية متخصصة.

ويقدم البرنامج، على مدار خمسة أيام، مزيجاً متكاملاً من المحاضرات التخصصية وورش العمل التفاعلية والزيارات الميدانية التطبيقية، بما يتيح للمشاركين الجمع بين المعرفة النظرية والخبرة العملية، والتعرف على أحدث المنهجيات والتقنيات المستخدمة في إدارة المخلفات الصلبة وتعزيز استدامة الخدمات البلدية.

محاور تدريبية متخصصة
يتناول البرنامج مجموعة من المحاور الرئيسية، من أبرزها:
• الإدارة المتكاملة والتقنيات الهندسية: التعرف على أحدث تقنيات معالجة المخلفات الصلبة، إلى جانب المعايير والاعتبارات البيئية والهندسية المرتبطة بتصميم المدافن الصحية وشبكات الطرق والخدمات المرتبطة بها.
• أنظمة الإدارة البيئية والعمل المناخي: استعراض نظم الإدارة البيئية (EMS)، وخطط الإدارة والرقابة البيئية والاجتماعية (ESMPs)، إلى جانب آليات التكيف والتخفيف من آثار تغير المناخ، وسبل إدماج العمل المناخي في التخطيط الحضري وعقود خدمات النظافة.
• الزيارات الميدانية والتطبيق العملي: يتضمن البرنامج زيارات ميدانية للتعرف بشكل مباشر على منظومة إدارة المخلفات، من خلال زيارة مصنع المعالجة الميكانيكية والبيولوجية (MBT) والمدفن الصحي بمنطقة شبرامنت، والاطلاع على منظومة جمع ونقل المخلفات لدى إحدى الشركات العاملة في محافظة القاهرة، فضلاً عن زيارة حديقة الأزهر باعتبارها نموذجاً بارزاً للتأهيل البيئي والتنمية الحضرية المستدامة.
• البنية التحتية المرنة والاقتصاد الدائري: يركز هذا المحور على تطوير بنية تحتية قادرة على الصمود أمام تداعيات تغير المناخ، وتعزيز كفاءة استخدام الطاقة والاستفادة من مصادر الطاقة المتجددة، إلى جانب تقييم المخاطر الفنية وتطبيق مبادئ الاقتصاد الدائري في إدارة المخلفات.
• التمويل والشراكات بين القطاعين العام والخاص (PPP): يتناول البرنامج أساسيات الشراكة بين القطاعين العام والخاص، وإعداد دراسات الجدوى والتحليل المالي للمشروعات وتعزيز قابليتها للتمويل (Bankability)، فضلاً عن آليات حشد التمويل وتطوير الخدمات البلدية المستدامة.

ويأتي تنفيذ هذا البرنامج في إطار الجهود الرامية إلى تعزيز قدرات الكوادر البلدية الفلسطينية وتزويدها بالأدوات والمنهجيات العلمية والعملية الحديثة، بما يدعم تطوير منظومات أكثر كفاءة ومرونة واستدامة لإدارة المخلفات الصلبة، ويعزز قدرتها على الاستجابة للتحديات البيئية والمناخية المتزايدة على المستويين المحلي والإقليمي.

ويؤكد سيداري من خلال هذا البرنامج أهمية الاستثمار في بناء القدرات وتبادل الخبرات والمعرفة، باعتبارهما من الركائز الأساسية لدعم التحول نحو إدارة مستدامة للمخلفات وتعزيز مرونة المدن والهيئات المحلية في مواجهة التحديات البيئية والمناخية.

CEDARE Launches the Second Round of Its Training Programme to Build the Capacity of Palestinian Municipal Staff in Solid Waste Management
The Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) has launched the second round of its specialised training programme aimed at building the capacities of staff working in municipalities and local authorities in the State of Palestine in the field of integrated and sustainable solid waste management. The programme is implemented with the support and funding of the Municipal Development and Lending Fund (MDLF).
The second round is being held from 4 to 8 October 2026, with the participation of 12 Palestinian municipal staff members, following the successful completion of the first round from 20 to 24 September 2026 and in preparation for the third and final round, scheduled for 11 to 15 October 2026. Overall, the programme aims to train 34 participants through three specialised training rounds.
Over five days, the programme combines specialised technical lectures, interactive workshops, and practical field visits, providing participants with an integrated learning experience that bridges theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice and introduces them to the latest approaches and technologies in solid waste management and sustainable municipal services.
Key Training Areas
The programme covers a range of specialised areas, including:
• Integrated Management and Engineering Technologies: Introducing the latest solid waste treatment technologies, along with environmental and engineering standards and considerations for the design of sanitary landfills and associated road and service networks.
• Environmental Management Systems and Climate Action: Exploring Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and Environmental and Social Management and Monitoring Plans (ESMPs), as well as adaptation and mitigation measures and approaches to integrating climate action into urban planning and municipal cleaning service contracts.
• Field Visits and Practical Application: The programme includes field visits designed to provide first-hand exposure to solid waste management systems, including a visit to the Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant and sanitary landfill in Shabramant, an on-site review of waste collection and transportation operations carried out by a service provider in Cairo Governorate, and a visit to Al-Azhar Park as a leading model of environmental rehabilitation and sustainable urban development.
• Resilient Infrastructure and the Circular Economy: Focusing on the development of infrastructure capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change, improving energy efficiency, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, assessing technical risks, and applying circular economy principles to waste management.
• Financing and Public–Private Partnerships (PPP): Addressing the fundamentals of public–private partnerships, feasibility studies and financial analysis of projects, enhancing project bankability, as well as financing mobilisation mechanisms and approaches to developing sustainable municipal services.
The implementation of this programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the capacities of Palestinian municipal staff and equip them with modern scientific and practical tools and methodologies. It supports the development of more efficient, resilient, and sustainable solid waste management systems while enhancing the ability of municipalities and local authorities to respond effectively to growing environmental and climate-related challenges at both the local and regional levels.
Through this programme, CEDARE reaffirms the importance of investing in capacity building, knowledge exchange, and the sharing of expertise as key pillars for advancing sustainable waste management and strengthening the resilience of cities and local authorities in the face of environmental and climate challenges.

سيداري يشارك في إطلاق التقرير العربي الرابع عشر للتنمية الثقافية حول الأمن الغذائي والمائي العربي

شارك مركز البيئة والتنمية للإقليم العربي وأوروبا (سيداري)، يوم ٥ أكتوبر ٢٠٢٦، في فعاليات برنامج التقرير العربي الرابع عشر للتنمية الثقافية، الصادر عن مؤسسة الفكر العربي بعنوان «الأمن الغذائي والمائي العربي: أزمات متراكمة ومبادرات واعدة»، والذي أطلقه الأمين العام لجامعة الدول العربية بمقر الأمانة العامة للجامعة.

أكد الأمين العام أن التكامل العربي أصبح ضرورة عملية تستدعي الاستفادة من القدرات والخبرات المتنوعة للدول العربية، وبناء قدرة عربية مشتركة أكثر فاعلية في مواجهة التحديات. ويمثل التقرير نقطة انطلاق لتحويل ما يطرحه من أفكار وتوصيات إلى مقترحات عملية تدعم مؤسسات وآليات العمل العربي المشترك.

تناولت الجلسات تشخيص واقع الأمن الغذائي والمائي العربي، والأزمات المتراكمة وتحديات المستقبل، إلى جانب أهمية التكامل العربي والتعاون الدولي في مجابهة تحديات الأمن الغذائي والمائي في المنطقة العربية.
وأدار معالي الأستاذ الدكتور خالد فهمي، المدير التنفيذي لسيداري ووزير البيئة الأسبق، الجلسة الحوارية الثالثة بعنوان ) مبادرات واعدة وتجارب مؤسسية لتعزيز الأمن الغذائي والمائي العربي( ، حيث تناولت الجلسة دور البحث العلمي والابتكار والتقنيات الحديثة في مواجهة تحديات الزراعة والمياه في المناطق الجافة وشبه الجافة، واستعرضت تجارب ناجحة في تطوير أصناف مقاومة للجفاف، وإدارة المياه، ومكافحة التصحر، وترشيد استخدام الموارد.كما ناقشت سبل توسيع نطاق هذه الحلول، وتعزيز التعاون العلمي العربي، وتحويل الابتكار إلى تطبيقات عملية مستدامة، مع تقديم نماذج مجرّبة في هذا المجال.

CEDARE Participates in the Launch of the 14th Arab Cultural Development Report on Arab Food and Water Security

The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) participated On 5 October 2026,
in the launch of the Arab Thought Foundation’s 14th Arab Cultural Development Report, titled ‘Arab Food and Water Security: Accumulated Crises and Promising Initiatives’. The report was launched by the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States at the League’s headquarters.

The Secretary-General emphasised that Arab integration has become a practical necessity, requiring Arab countries to draw on their diverse capabilities and expertise and build a more effective collective capacity to address shared challenges. The report provides a starting point for translating its ideas and recommendations into practical proposals that support the institutions and mechanisms of joint Arab action.

The sessions examined the current state of food and water security in the Arab world, accumulated crises and future challenges, alongside the importance of Arab integration and international cooperation in addressing these challenges across the region.
H.E. Prof. Dr Khaled Fahmy, Executive Director of CEDARE and former Minister of Environment, moderated the third panel discussion, titled ‘Promising Initiatives and Institutional Experiences to Enhance Arab Food and Water Security’.

The session explored the role of scientific research, innovation and modern technologies in addressing agricultural and water challenges in arid and semi-arid regions. It showcased successful approaches to developing drought-resistant crop varieties, managing water, combating desertification and optimising resource use.

The discussion also explored pathways for scaling up these solutions, advancing scientific collaboration among Arab countries, and translating innovation into sustainable, practical applications, drawing on proven models in the field.

نظّم مركز البيئة والتنمية للإقليم العربي وأوروبا (سيداري)، اليوم الأحد 4 أكتوبر 2026، احتفالية لتكريم الفائزين بجائزة سيداري للابتكار البيئي 2026 – النسخة الأولى وجائزة ستوكهولم جونيور للمياه – مصر 2026، والاحتفاء بالإنجاز الذي حققته ممثلة مصر، الطالبة بسملة رضا دياب، بفوزها بجائزة اختيار الجمهور (People’s Choice Award) في النهائيات الدولية لجائزة ستوكهولم جونيور للمياه 2026.

شهدت الاحتفالية حضور معالي الوزيرة الدكتورة/ منال عوض، وزارة التنمية المحلية والبيئة ، ومعالي السيد السفير/ داج يولين، Embassy of Sweden in Cairo -سفارة السويد بالقاهرة - جمهورية مصر العربية، ومعالي السيد السفير/ ناجي الناجي، القائم بأعمال سفارة دولة فلسطين لدى جمهورية مصر العربية ، إلى جانب الدكتور/ عبادة سرحان، ممثل Association of Arab Universities اتحاد الجامعات العربية، وممثلي المؤسسات التعليمية والأكاديمية والبحثية، وأعضاء لجنتي تحكيم الجائزتين، وعدد من الخبراء والشركاء.

وأكد الأستاذ الدكتور/ خالد فهمي، المدير التنفيذي لمركز البيئة والتنمية للإقليم العربي وأوروبا (سيداري) ووزير البيئة الأسبق، أن الاحتفالية تمثل منصة للاحتفاء بالتميز والابتكار الشبابي، وإبراز قدرة الطلاب والشباب على تقديم حلول علمية وعملية للتحديات البيئية والمائية، مؤكدًا أن تكريم الشباب المبتكرين لا يمثل نهاية لمسيرتهم، وإنما بداية لمسار جديد يتيح لهم تطوير أفكارهم والانتقال بها من مرحلة الابتكار إلى التطبيق الفعلي.

وأشار إلى أهمية مواصلة التعاون مع الجامعات والمؤسسات البحثية والشركاء لتوفير الفرص التي تساعد الشباب على تطوير مشروعاتهم وتعزيز أثرها البيئي والتنموي، وإتاحة مساحات أكبر للتواصل مع الخبراء والمؤسسات والشركاء، بما يسهم في تحويل الأفكار والابتكارات إلى حلول عملية ومستدامة تخدم المجتمعات في مصر والمنطقة العربية.

وأكد الدكتور خالد فهمي أن سيداري يؤمن بأهمية الاستثمار في قدرات الشباب، وفتح مسارات مستمرة أمامهم للتعلم والتطوير والمشاركة في الحوار العلمي والبيئي على المستويين الإقليمي والدولي، مشيرًا إلى أن دعم الأجيال الجديدة من المبتكرين يمثل جزءًا أساسيًا من جهود المركز لتعزيز التنمية المستدامة في المنطقة.

جائزة سيداري للابتكار البيئي 2026 – النسخة الأولى

ركزت جائزة سيداري للابتكار البيئي 2026 – النسخة الأولى على أربعة محاور رئيسية، هي: المناخ والطبيعة، والاقتصاد الدائري، والأمن المائي والغذائي، والطاقة المستدامة والمرونة الحضرية.

وشهدت النسخة الأولى مشاركة 237 مشروعًا من 15 دولة عربية، بما يعكس تنوع الأفكار والمبادرات الشبابية واهتمام الطلاب بتقديم حلول مبتكرة للتحديات البيئية والتنموية في المنطقة العربية.

لجنة تحكيم جائزة سيداري للابتكار البيئي 2026

تولى تقييم المشروعات نخبة من الخبرات الأكاديمية والمهنية العربية والدولية، ضمت كلًا من: الأستاذة الدكتورة/ أسماء علي أبا حسين، من جامعة البحرين؛ والأستاذ الدكتور/ ناصر سليمان العمري، من جامعة الملك عبدالعزيز بالمملكة العربية السعودية؛ والدكتورة/ شيرين نبيل أبو غزالة، ممثلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية وعضو هيئة التدريس بجامعة عمّان العربية في الأردن؛ والدكتور/ صابر عثمان، مساعد وزير التنمية المحلية والبيئة للاستدامة والمسؤولية المجتمعية في مصر؛ والدكتور/ محمود فتح الله، مدير إدارة شؤون البيئة والأرصاد الجوية ورئيس الأمانة الفنية لمجلس الوزراء العرب المسؤولين عن شؤون البيئة بجامعة الدول العربية؛ والأستاذ الدكتور/ هشام العسكري، أستاذ علوم نظم الاستشعار عن بُعد بجامعة تشابمان؛ والمهندس/ أحمد أبو السعود، الخبير البيئي والمستشار ببرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي (UNDP)؛ والدكتور/ عمر البدوي، خبير موارد المياه والأراضي ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية بسيداري.

واستند تقييم المشروعات إلى مجموعة من المعايير، شملت الابتكار، والجدوى، والأثر البيئي، وإمكانات التطبيق والتوسع. وأسفرت المنافسة عن فوز أربعة مشروعات متميزة من فلسطين ومصر، حيث جاءت النتائج على النحو التالي:

- المركز الأول – فلسطين: فاز الطالب أنس يوسف محمود الأشقر، من جامعة الأزهر – غزة، عن مشروع (NaqaaSync)

- المركز الثاني – مصر: فاز فريق من جامعة المنوفية، يضم فتحي أيمن فتحي حجر، ومصطفى مسعد علي أبو النصر، وجابر تامر جابر عفيفي، عن مشروع«Build Replast».

- المركز الثالث – مصر: فاز فريق يضم ندى رضا عبد العاطي من الجامعة المصرية الصينية، وحبيبة خالد علي من الجامعة المصرية اليابانية للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، ورويدة سيد طه من جامعة النيل، عن مشروع «الكشاف الذكي (Smart Scout).

- المركز الثالث مكرر – مصر: فاز حسن السيد عبداللطيف وعبدالله أحمد خليل من جامعة المنصورة الجديدة، عن مشروع لتحويل النفايات الإلكترونية إلى سماعة طبية عالية الدقة لرصد أصوات القلب باستخدام المعالجة التكيفية للإشارات.

جائزة ستوكهولم جونيور للمياه 2026 – مصر
في إطار جائزة ستوكهولم جونيور للمياه 2026– مصر ، ينظم مركز سيداري النسخة الوطنية من الجائزة في مصر، بالشراكة مع مؤسسة ستوكهولم الدولية للمياه، وذلك للسنة الثانية على التوالي، بهدف تشجيع طلاب المدارس على ابتكار حلول علمية للتحديات المرتبطة بالمياه والاستدامة.
وشهدت النسخة المصرية هذا العام مشاركة 110 مشروعات، خضعت للتقييم من خلال لجنة تحكيم وطنية من الخبراء والأكاديميين والمتخصصين في مجالات المياه والهندسة والبيئة.
لجنة التحكيم الوطنية لجائزة ستوكهولم جونيور للمياه 2026 – مصر
ضمت لجنة التحكيم الوطنية كلًا من: معالي الدكتور/ محمد عبد العاطي، المستشار الإقليمي لشؤون إدارة الموارد المائية بسيداري ووزير الموارد المائية والري السابق بجمهورية مصر العربية؛ والأستاذ الدكتور/ أحمد جابر، أستاذ الهندسة الكيميائية بجامعة القاهرة ورئيس شركة كيمونكس مصر؛ والأستاذة الدكتورة/ شيرين شوقي، أستاذ الهندسة المدنية بمعهد بحوث النيل بالمركز القومي لبحوث المياه؛ والمهندس/ أحمد أبو السعود، الرئيس التنفيذي الأسبق لجهاز شؤون البيئة وخبير أول في إدارة الموارد المائية والبيئية؛ والدكتور/ محمد خالد، أستاذ مساعد ورئيس قسم الهندسة المدنية بكلية الهندسة والتكنولوجيا بجامعة بدر بالقاهرة، وخبير بيئي بشركة كيمونكس مصر للاستشارات.

و اختارت اللجنة الطالبة بسملة رضا دياب من مدرسة الشهيد أحمد موافي
المتميزة للغات – محافظة الدقهلية للفوز بالمركز الأول في المسابقة الوطنية وتمثيل مصر في النهائيات الدولية، عن مشروعها الذي يهدف إلى تطوير خلايا الوقود الميكروبية لمعالجة مياه الصرف الصحي وإنتاج الطاقة، باستخدام الكربون المنشط المستخلص من المخلفات الزراعية، إلى جانب مواد نانوية مشتقة من أوراق الشاي.

وحققت بسملة إنجازًا دوليًا لمصر بفوزها بجائزة اختيار الجمهور (People’s Choice Award) خلال النهائيات الدولية لجائزة ستوكهولم جونيور للمياه 2026 في ستوكهولم، في تأكيد على قدرة الشباب المصري على المنافسة عالميًا وتقديم ابتكارات علمية تسهم في مواجهة تحديات المياه والاستدامة.

CEDARE Honors Winners of the First Edition of the CEDARE Environmental Innovation Award 2026 and Stockholm Junior Water Prize – Egypt 2026, Celebrates Egypt’s People’s Choice Award Win

Cairo – October 4, 2026

The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) honored the winners of the inaugural CEDARE Environmental Innovation Award 2026 and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize – Egypt 2026 on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The event also celebrated the achievement of Egyptian student Basmala Reda Diab, who won the People’s Choice Award at the international finals of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2026.

The ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment; H.E. Mr. Dag Juhlin, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Arab Republic of Egypt; and H.E. Mr. Naji Al-Naji, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Palestine. Also in attendance were Dr. Obada Sarhan, representative of the Association of Arab Universities; representatives of educational, academic, and research institutions; members of the two award juries; and a number of experts and partners.

Prof. Dr. Khaled Fahmy, Executive Director of CEDARE and former Minister of Environment, emphasized that the ceremony serves as a platform to celebrate excellence and youth innovation and to highlight the ability of students and young people to develop scientific and practical solutions to environmental and water-related challenges. He stressed that honoring young innovators does not mark the end of their journey, but rather the beginning of a new path that enables them to further develop their ideas and move from innovation to practical implementation.

He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with universities, research institutions, and partners to provide opportunities that help young people develop their projects and enhance their environmental and developmental impact. He also emphasized the importance of creating greater opportunities for young innovators to connect with experts, institutions, and partners, thereby helping transform ideas and innovations into practical and sustainable solutions that serve communities in Egypt and the Arab region.

Dr. Khaled Fahmy emphasized CEDARE’s commitment to investing in youth capabilities and creating ongoing opportunities for young people to learn, develop, and engage in scientific and environmental dialogue at both regional and international levels. He noted that supporting new generations of innovators is a cornerstone of CEDARE’s efforts to advance sustainable development in the region.

He concluded by stressing the importance of the event as a catalyst for further creativity and achievement and expressed hope that young people’s innovations would find their way into practical application, contributing to a more sustainable future for Egypt and the Arab region.

CEDARE Environmental Innovation Award 2026 – First Edition
The first edition of the CEDARE Environmental Innovation Award 2026 focused on four key themes: climate and nature; the circular economy; water and food security; and sustainable energy and urban resilience.
The inaugural edition saw the participation of 237 projects from 15 Arab countries, reflecting the diversity of youth-led ideas and initiatives, as well as students’ interest in developing innovative solutions to the environmental and development challenges facing the Arab region.

CEDARE Environmental Innovation Award 2026 Jury
The projects were evaluated by a panel of distinguished Arab and international academic and professional experts comprising Prof. Dr. Asma Ali Abahussain, University of Bahrain; Prof. Dr. Nasser Sulaiman Al-Omari, King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia; Dr. Sherine Nabil Abu Ghazaleh, representative of the Association of Arab Universities and faculty member at Amman Arab University, Jordan; and Dr. Saber Osman, Assistant to the Minister of Local Development and Environment for Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Egypt.

The jury also included Dr. Mahmoud Fathallah, Director of the Environment and Meteorology Department and Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment at the League of Arab States; Prof. Dr. Hesham El-Askary, Professor of Remote Sensing and Earth Systems Science at Chapman University; Eng. Ahmed Abou El-Saoud, Environmental Expert and Consultant at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); and Dr. Omar El-Badawy, Expert in Water Resources, Land, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at CEDARE.

The projects were evaluated according to a set of criteria, including innovation, feasibility, environmental impact, and potential for implementation and scaling.

The competition resulted in four outstanding winning projects from Palestine and Egypt, as follows:

First Place – Palestine: Anas Yousef Mohammed Al-Ashqar from Al-Azhar University – Gaza won for the “NaqaaSync” project.
Second Place – Egypt: A team from Menoufia University comprising Fathy Ayman Fathy Hajar, Mostafa Mosaad Ali Abu Al-Nasr, and Gaber Tamer Gaber Afifi won for the “Build Replast” project.
Third Place – Egypt: A team comprising Nada Reda Abdel-Aati from the Egyptian Chinese University, Habiba Khaled Ali from the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology, and Rouida Sayed Taha from Nile University won for the “Smart Scout” project.
Joint Third Place – Egypt: Hassan El-Sayed Abdel-Latif and Abdullah Ahmed Khalil from New Mansoura University won for a project that converts electronic waste into a high-precision medical stethoscope for monitoring heart sounds using adaptive signal processing.

Stockholm Junior Water Prize – Egypt 2026

CEDARE organizes the national edition of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Egypt in partnership with the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). Now in its second consecutive year, the initiative aims to encourage school students to develop scientific solutions to challenges related to water and sustainability.
This year’s Egyptian edition saw the participation of 110 projects, which were evaluated by a national jury comprising experts, academics, and specialists in the fields of water, engineering, and the environment.

National Jury for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize – Egypt 2026
The national jury comprised H.E. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Aty, Regional Advisor for Water Resources Management at CEDARE and former Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Arab Republic of Egypt; Prof. Dr. Ahmed Gaber, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Cairo University and Chairman of Chemonics Egypt; Prof. Dr. Sherine Shawky, Professor at the Nile Research Institute, National Water Research Center; Eng. Ahmed Abou El-Saoud, former CEO of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) and Senior Expert in Water Resources and Environmental Management; and Dr. Mohamed Khaled, Assistant Professor and Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Badr University in Cairo, and Environmental Expert at Chemonics Egypt.

The jury selected Basmala Reda Diab as the first-place winner of the national competition to represent Egypt at the international finals. Her project focuses on developing microbial fuel cells for wastewater treatment and energy production, using activated carbon derived from agricultural waste alongside nanomaterials derived from tea leaves.

Basmala achieved international recognition for Egypt by winning the People’s Choice Award at the international finals of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2026 in Stockholm. This achievement highlights the ability of Egyptian youth to compete at the international level and develop scientific innovations that contribute to addressing water and sustainability challenges.

سيداري ومبادرة الشرق الأوسط الأخضر يبحثان تعزيز التعاون في مجالات البيئة والتنمية المستدامة

بحث سعادة المهندس إبراهيم التركي، الأمين العام لمبادرة الشرق الأوسط الأخضر، مع معالي الدكتور خالد فهمي، المدير التنفيذي لمركز البيئة والتنمية للإقليم العربي وأوروبا (سيداري)، سبل تعزيز التعاون المشترك في مجالات البيئة والتنمية المستدامة، وذلك خلال لقاء عُقد في القاهرة.

وتناول اللقاء عددًا من الموضوعات ذات الاهتمام المشترك، وفي مقدمتها تنمية الغطاء النباتي، ومكافحة تدهور الأراضي، وتعزيز العمل البيئي والمناخي، إلى جانب بحث فرص دعم المبادرات والمشروعات التي تسهم في تحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة وتعزيز resilience البيئية في المنطقة.

كما ناقش الجانبان أهمية تنسيق الجهود بين المؤسسات الإقليمية والدولية، وتبادل الخبرات والمعارف، والاستفادة من الدراسات والبحوث التطبيقية وقواعد البيانات والمعلومات الحديثة، بما يدعم تطوير حلول عملية ومستدامة للتحديات البيئية والمناخية التي تواجه المنطقة العربية.

CEDARE and the Middle East Green Initiative Explore Opportunities to Strengthen Environmental and Sustainable Development Cooperation

H.E. Eng. Ibrahim Al-Turki, Secretary-General of the Middle East Green Initiative, met with H.E. Dr. Khaled Fahmy, Executive Director of the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE), to discuss opportunities for strengthening cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainable development during a meeting held in Cairo.

The meeting addressed a number of areas of mutual interest, particularly vegetation cover development, combating land degradation, and advancing environmental and climate action, as well as exploring opportunities to support initiatives and projects that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing environmental resilience across the region.

The two sides also discussed the importance of coordinating efforts among regional and international institutions, exchanging knowledge and expertise, and leveraging applied research, studies, databases, and up-to-date information to support the development of practical and sustainable solutions to the environmental and climate challenges facing the Arab region.

The meeting underscored the importance of continued dialogue and coordination between CEDARE and the Middle East Green Initiative, with a view to expanding areas of cooperation and knowledge exchange, and supporting efforts toward a more sustainable and resilient environmental future for the region.

بدعوة من إدارة شؤون البيئة بجامعة الدول العربية: سيداري يشارك في أعمال الدورة السابعة والثلاثين لمجلس الوزراء العرب المسؤولين عن شؤون البيئة بالقاهرة.

شارك مركز البيئة والتنمية للإقليم العربي وأوروبا (سيداري) في أعمال الدورة السابعة والثلاثين لمجلس الوزراء العرب المسؤولين عن شؤون البيئة، التي عُقدت اليوم بمقر الأمانة العامة جامعة الدول العربية - League of Arab States بالقاهرة، بمشاركة عدد من أصحاب المعالي وزراء البيئة ورؤساء وفود الدول العربية، وممثلي جامعة الدول العربية والمنظمات الإقليمية والدولية المعنية بقضايا البيئة والتنمية.

شهدت الجلسة الافتتاحية كلمات لعدد من ممثلي الدول والمؤسسات والمنظمات المشاركة، من بينها مركز سيداري، إلى جانب عدد من المنظمات الإقليمية والدولية المعنية بقضايا البيئة والتنمية.
وألقى معالي الدكتور خالد فهمي، المدير التنفيذي لمركز سيداري ووزير البيئة المصري الأسبق، كلمة المركز، أعرب خلالها عن تقديره لجامعة الدول العربية والأمانة الفنية للمجلس، مؤكدًا أهمية مواصلة التعاون والتنسيق في إطار العمل البيئي العربي المشترك.

أكد د. خالد فهمي أن سيداري يضع خبراته وقدراته الفنية في خدمة الدول العربية ومؤسساتها الوطنية، من خلال التعاون الفني، وإعداد الدراسات، وتطوير القدرات، ودعم التخطيط وتنفيذ البرامج البيئية، وفقًا للأولويات الوطنية. كما شدد على أهمية تكامل الأدوار بين المؤسسات والمنظمات العاملة في المنطقة، وتبادل المعرفة والخبرات لمواجهة التحديات البيئية والتنموية المشتركة.

كما أعرب د. خالد فهمي عن خالص تقدير سيداري للمملكة العربية السعودية وجمهورية مصر العربية، لما تقدمانه من دعم وتعاون للمركز، مؤكدًا تطلع سيداري إلى مواصلة تعزيز التعاون مع الدول العربية وتوسيع مجالات العمل المشترك بما يخدم الأولويات البيئية والتنموية في المنطقة.
وأشار كذلك إلى أهمية توفير الموارد اللازمة لتنفيذ البرامج والأنشطة المتفق عليها، بما يدعم استمرارية التعاون ويعزز أثر المشروعات والبرامج التي ينفذها المركز بالتعاون مع الدول والمؤسسات الشريكة.

وتأتي مشاركة سيداري في أعمال الدورة في إطار حرص المركز على مواصلة إسهامه في منظومة العمل العربي المشترك، وتعزيز التعاون والتنسيق مع جامعة الدول العربية والدول الأعضاء والمؤسسات والمنظمات الشريكة، دعمًا للأولويات البيئية والتنموية في المنطقة العربية.

CEDARE Participates in the 37th Session of the Council of Arab
Ministers Responsible for the Environment

Cairo – October 1, 2026

At the kind invitation of the Environment Affairs Department of the League of Arab States, the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) participated in the 37th Session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment, held at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo.

The session brought together Arab environment ministers, heads of delegations, representatives of the League of Arab States, and regional and international organizations to address key environmental and sustainable development issues and strengthen joint Arab environmental action.

The opening session featured addresses by representatives of participating countries, institutions, and organizations, including CEDARE, as well as regional and international bodies concerned with environmental and development issues.

H.E. Dr. Khaled Fahmy, Executive Director of CEDARE and former Minister of Environment of Egypt, delivered CEDARE’s address, expressing his appreciation to the League of Arab States and the Council’s Technical Secretariat. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and coordination within the framework of joint Arab environmental action.

Dr. Fahmy highlighted CEDARE’s commitment to placing its expertise and technical capabilities at the service of Arab countries and their national institutions through technical cooperation, the preparation of studies, capacity building, and support for the planning and implementation of environmental programs in alignment with national priorities. He also underscored the importance of complementary roles among institutions and organizations operating in the region and the exchange of knowledge and expertise to address shared environmental and development challenges.

Dr. Fahmy also expressed CEDARE’s sincere appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arab Republic of Egypt for their continued support and cooperation with the Center. He reaffirmed CEDARE’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation with Arab countries and expanding joint efforts to advance the region’s environmental and development priorities.

He further highlighted the importance of securing the necessary resources to implement agreed-upon programs and activities, thereby ensuring the continuity of cooperation and enhancing the impact of projects and programs implemented by CEDARE in partnership with countries and institutions across the region.
CEDARE’s participation in the session reflects the Center’s commitment to contributing to the framework of joint Arab environmental action and strengthening cooperation and coordination with the League of Arab States, its member states, and partner institutions and organizations in support of environmental and development priorities across the Arab region.

Dr. Fahmy concluded his remarks by reaffirming CEDARE’s commitment to continued collaboration with Arab countries and partners to advance shared environmental priorities, wishing the session every success in supporting Arab countries’ efforts to protect their natural resources and achieve sustainable development.
