Maintaining a moderate diet
Miqdam Ibn Madikarib said, “I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his back straight. But if he must (fill it), then he is to keep one third for food, one third for drink, and one third for air.’” (Ibn Majah)
Food has a great effect on the performance of both the body and brain. Overeating causes weight gain and is associated with a myriad of health problems. It also causes spiritual harm in that it increases drowsiness, fatigue, and lethargy making it more difficult to attend to our ritual worship with energy and concentration. The hadith clearly highlights that overeating is a reprehensible quality we should refrain from.
It was the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to eat humbly and never fill his stomach to its limit. He said, “I eat as the servant eats, and I sit as the servant sits. Indeed, I am only a servant.”
