Singapore and Egypt are working together to develop stronger and more resilient types of rice.

Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL), Singapore, and the Egyptian Rice Research & Training Centre (ERRTC) are collaborating on an ongoing research project on climate-smart rice, focusing on high-yielding, high-quality varieties with short growth durations and improved climate resilience. Egyptian rice varieties are an important focus of the research, as they have demonstrated strong adaptability to harsh climatic conditions, including high temperatures, drought, and high salinity. Their characteristics may provide valuable genetic resources for the development of climate-resilient rice varieties. On 7 October, Dr Yin Zhongchao and Deputy Chief of Mission Raymond Chow met with ERRTC officials to discuss the progress of the collaboration and inspect the growth of Temasek rice in the fields of Sakha, Kafr El Sheikh Governorate, Egypt. The Egyptians are represented by Dr Zayed Basshouni, Director, RRTC. The photographs show the maturing Temasek rice plants in the field, as well as their panicles.

"Head of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Meets Singapore’s Ambassador to Egypt to Discuss Enhancing Investment Cooperation and Exploring New Opportunities for Industrial and Logistics Projects.

Mostafa Sheikhoun: The Integrated Capabilities of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Open Broad Prospects for Cooperation with Singaporean Companies.

Mr. Mostafa Sheikhoun, Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), received this morning, at the Authority’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, H.E. Dominic Goh, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to the Arab Republic of Egypt, to discuss ways of enhancing economic and investment cooperation between the two sides and to review investment opportunities available within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

The meeting aimed to support the expansion of partnerships with the Singaporean business community and was attended by a number of the Authority’s executive officials.

During the meeting, Mr. Mostafa Sheikhoun reviewed the key investment and competitive advantages of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, including its integrated industrial zones and ports, logistics services, as well as investment incentives and advantages.

He stressed that the integration of these capabilities strengthens the Zone’s ability to attract high-quality investments and serve regional and global trade flows and supply chains.

He noted that the transformations taking place in global supply chains are increasing the importance of policies aimed at the geographical proximity of supply chains (Nearshoring), creating new opportunities for the Suez Canal Economic Zone to capitalize on its strategic location, integrated infrastructure, and trade agreements that provide projects with access to broad regional and global markets.

Mr. Mostafa Sheikhoun added that Singapore possesses strong expertise in the fields of industry, logistics services, and port management, opening broad prospects for enhancing cooperation and exchanging expertise in these areas. He affirmed the Authority’s interest in attracting more Singaporean companies to benefit from the available investment opportunities, particularly in priority sectors among the 21 sectors that the Authority is targeting for localization and deeper local manufacturing.

For his part, Ambassador, H.E. Dominic Goh praised the strategic location and integrated capabilities of the Suez Canal Economic Zone in the fields of industry, transportation, and logistics services, stressing the importance of the investment opportunities offered by the Zone.

He added that there are promising opportunities to enhance cooperation and investment in a number of priority areas, including water desalination, renewable energy, and green fuels. He stressed the importance of continued coordination between the two sides to promote awareness of these opportunities and encourage Singaporean companies to take advantage of them, thereby supporting economic and investment cooperation between Egypt and Singapore and opening new avenues for partnership in high value added sectors."

"EgyptAir plans New Routes to Singapore and Sydney for 2027.

EgyptAir has held talks with officials from Singapore's Changai Airport and Australia's Sydney Airport, regarding plans to launch new flight to both destinations in 2027.

The discussions took place amid ongoing meetings held on the sidelines of the Ala-meen International Air and Space conference.

In a meeting with Amr Adawy, Head of the commerical Sector for EgyptAir, along with representatives from the General Administration for Network and Fleet Planning and other company officials, the launch of direct EgyptAir flights to Singapore’s Changi Airport and connections to Sydney Airport were discussed.

This initiative aligns with EgyptAir’s strategy to expand its route network into new markets and connect three major global cities.

During the meeting, Amr Adawy stated: "We are pleased to announce that we are exploring the launch of EgyptAir flights to both Singapore and Sydney. This move will strengthen EgyptAir’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region and link it to our existing network across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Particularly as we take delivery of our latest Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Both Singapore and Sydney are key global aviation hubs that hold significant importance within EgyptAir’s route network."
