Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo

We are pleased to invite you to the open studio of Vienna-based artist Marlene Coates. She will be presenting work in progress developed over the past two months during her residency at the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo. Working with sculpture, drawing and photography she explores how the past inscribes itself onto bodies, gestures, and surfaces, as well as the sedimented afterimages that result. During her residency in Cairo, she was particularly interested in historical friezes, reliefs, and wall registers, as well as the narrative structures they contain.

The open studio will be accompanied by an artist talk between Marlene Coates and Egyptian artist Omar Abd El-Baki, who completed a residency at PART in Vienna this February.

كما سيقام ضمن فاعليات الاستوديو المفتوح لقاء فني يجمع مارلين كوتس و الفنان المصري عمر عبد الباقي و الذي أتم إقامة فنية بفيينا خلال شهر فبراير الماضي.

How can museums attract new audiences and build lasting community connections?

This three-day program with Christine Koblitz from Wien Museum explores state-of-the-art approaches for audience engagement and inclusive museum programming. Drawing on examples from Austrian and international museums, participants will gain practical tools to build new community partnerships, create meaningful dialogue and design engaging visitor experiences.

All sessions can be attended independently. The online talk is open to all registered participants, while the workshops on Day 2 and Day 3 are each limited to 15 participants.

A B O U T: Christine Koblitz is Engagement Manager at the Wien Museum and specialises in digital culture, Instagram and games. She curated the exhibition “Takeover – Street Art & Skateboarding” (2019) and develops interactive formats such as the AR escape game “A Shared Secret” at the Clock Museum, the AI live prompting sessions and the monthly Wien Museum Pub Quiz.

Join us for a conversation with Austrian artist Benedikt Werth about his work and artistic approach to urban documentaries during the SABBART symposium on the topic of Urban and Green Spaces.

About the artist:
The Austrian documentary filmmaker and artist Benedikt Werth graduated in „Metropolitan Culture“ (critical urban studies) at HafenCity University Hamburg. From 2018 to 2023 he studied Art and Film under Thomas Heise and Tizza Covi at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and is currently living and working as a filmmaker, film editor, colorist and DoP in Vienna.

Benedikt Werth was already working in Cairo in 2025 as part of a research project during which he collected documentary material in the city. At the moment he is developing the project Filling Spaces in 2026 in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo. In this artist talk, he will explore the question of how cinematic spaces are created—and how they move between documentation, fiction, and memory.

انضموا إلينا في حوار مع الفنان النمساوي "بيندكت ويرث" حول أعماله ونهجه الفني في الأفلام الوثائقية الحضرية، وذلك ضمن فعاليات ندوة "صبأرت" التي تُقام حول موضوع المساحات الحضرية والخضراء.

عن الفنان:
حصل مخرج الأفلام الوثائقية النمساوي بيندكت فيرت على درجة علمية في الثقافة الحضرية (الدراسات الحضرية النقدية) من جامعة هافين سيتي بمدينة هامبورج.

وفي الفترة من عام ٢٠۱٨ الى عام ٢٠٢٤ درس الفنون و السينما تحت اشراف توماس هايزة و تيزا كوفي بأكاديمية الفنون الجميلة بفيينا و هو حاليا مقيم و يعمل بفيينا كمخرج سينمائي و مونتير و مصمم ألوان و مدير تصوير.

لقد عمل بنيدكت بالقاهرة عام ٢٠٢٥ حيث كان مشاركا في مشروع بحثي حيث قام بجمع مواد وثائقية في المدينة. و حاليا أي في عام ٢٠٢٦ يقوم بالعمل على مشروع "ملىء المساحات" بالتعاون مع المركز الثقافي النمساوي بالقاهرة.

وفي هذه الجلسة الحوارية مع الفنان سيتعرض لموضوع تكوين الفضاءات السينمائية و كيف تتحرك بين التوثيق و الخيال و الذاكرة.

This writing circle explores the small, persistent forms of life that emerge within urban and damaged environments: moss in concrete cracks, weeds on construction sites, mushrooms after biological decay, flowers in wastelands, softness inside structures built to be hard.

Rather than treating nature as somewhere “outside” the city, this writing circle begins with the idea that urban nature is already here: growing through fences, under walls, between paving stones, on abandoned lots, in the dusty corners of Cario´s buildings, in the body, in memory. These small ecologies become metaphors for resilience, repair, grief, resistance, and tenderness.

تستكشف هذه الدائرة الكتابية أشكال الحياة الصغيرة والمثابِرة التي تنبثق داخل البيئات الحضرية والمتضرّرة: طحالب في شقوق الخرسانة، حشائش في مواقع البناء، فِطريات بعد التحلّل البيولوجي، أزهار في الأراضي القاحلة، ولمسات من النعومة داخل هياكل صُمِّمت لتكون قاسية.

بدل ما ننظر إلى الطبيعة باعتبارها شيئًا “خارج” المدينة، تنطلق هذه الدائرة من فكرة إن الطبيعة الحضرية موجودة بالفعل من حوالينا: بتنمو بين الأسوار، تحت الجدران، وبين بلاط الأرصفة، وفي الأراضي المهجورة، وفي الأركان المُغبّرة من عمارات القاهرة، جوّه أجسادنا، وكمان في ذاكرتنا. هذه الإيكولوجيات الصغيرة تتحوّل إلى استعارات عن الصمود، والإصلاح، والحِداد، والمقاومة، والحنان.
