As of May 21, 2026, all U.S.-bound American citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who have been present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within 21 days of arrival in the United States must only enter through Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) for enhanced screening. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will apply enhanced public health screening at IAD in response to the Ebola outbreak. The Dulles requirement applies to all passengers, including U.S. citizens and LPRs, who were present in those countries. Please be prepared for flight changes or cancellations. The Department of State strongly urges Americans not to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, or Uganda for any reason and to reconsider travel to Rwanda due to the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus disease outbreak in the region. The Department’s Travel Advisories for DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda are now Level 4 – Do Not Travel, and the Travel Advisory for Rwanda is Level 3 – Reconsider Travel. The U.S. Embassy in Asmara proudly celebrated the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America with friends and colleagues in attendance on May 7. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Christine Meyer delivered remarks highlighting Freedom 250 and the enduring values of freedom, democracy, partnership, and mutual respect that have guided the United States for 250 years and continue to strengthen ties between the American and Eritrean people. The celebration, which coincided with bountiful rains, brought together government officials, including Foreign Minister Osman Saleh as the Guest of Honor, members of the diplomatic community, partners, alumni, and friends of the Embassy to commemorate this historic milestone and reflect on the importance of international friendship and cooperation.
