Fusion for Energy (F4E) is the European Union’s Joint Undertaking for ITER and the Development of Fusion Energy. The organisation was created under the Euratom Treaty by a decision of the Council of the European Union in order to meet three objectives:

F4E is responsible for providing Europe’s contribution to ITER, the world’s largest scientific partnership that aims to demonstrate fusion as a viable and sustainable source of energy. ITER brings together seven parties that represent half of the world’s population – the EU, Russia, Japan, China, India, South Korea and the United States. F4E also supports fusion research and development initiatives through the Broader Approach Agreement, signed with Japan – a fusion energy partnership which will last for 10 years. Ultimately, F4E will contribute towards the construction of demonstration fusion reactors. F4E is established for a period of 35 years from 19 April 2007 and is located in Barcelona, Spain.

Two years of professional growth and fond memories 💙

The journey of F4E’s current trainees is coming to an end.

Two years ago we welcomed a cohort of 40 young professionals brimming with fresh talent, ideas and enthusiasm.

Today we bid them farewell, proud of their evolution and grateful for their contribution.

We’ll miss them — but will they miss us? 😉

Italy’s present and future Big Science engineers come together in L’Aquila ⚙️

Last weekend, F4E took part at an event in INFN - Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare with Italian companies, universities, labs and institutions.

The discussions highlighted how large scientific infrastructures like and are mobilising industry across Europe. To build them, we must keep nurturing engineering skills and a workforce ready to master complex technologies.

F4E presented the growth of Europe’s fusion supply chain alongside the progress of ITER and other fusion projects.

Speakers from CERN, Laboratori Nazionali Del Gran Sasso - INFN and Walter Tosto Spa also shared examples of how Italian industry is seizing opportunities through collaboration with major research projects.

Yet another manufacturing success! The first Inner Vertical Target is ready for ITER.

Fusion For Energy (F4E) and Research Instruments completed this first-of-a-kind component, which will face the blazing plasma inside the world’s largest fusion reactor.

This achievement rewards years of collaboration, investing in new tools, optimising processes and testing prototypes.

The component, part of ITER’s divertor, is made to endure heat fluxes of up to 20 MW/m² —10 times more than a spacecraft re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.

We counted with the skills and expertise of over 60 international suppliers. Well done to all!

A delivery for the ages: Europe’s final Vacuum Vessel sector is in ITER! 🙌

It’s the end of a remarkable 16-year journey, driven by Fusion For Energy, in collaboration with Ansaldo Energia, Westinghouse Electric Company, Walter Tosto Spa and ITER Organization.

Five 500-tonne steel components. Over 2 million hours of work. 750 km of welding. More than 15 companies involved.

Europe’s industry showed that no challenge is too big when we put our skills and expertise to work.

This is also the last heavy exceptional load to be shipped to ITER, safely transported by Daher by sea and land from Monfalcone to Cadarache.

A reward for bold innovators 📢 💡

F4E has launched the 2026 Fusion Technology Transfer Award: 10,000 EUR for projects that take solutions from fusion to the market.

Plenty of technologies and know-how developed around projects like can find applications far beyond their original scope.

The award, organised in collaboration with EUROfusion, aims to recognise innovation across Europe’s fusion supply chain and supports its business potential.

Romanian industry explores fusion’s business opportunities 🌟

F4E joined the first-ever Romanian Industry Day dedicated to Big Science, hosted by the Camera de Comert si Industrie a Romaniei in Bucharest.

We introduced delegates to F4E’s mission to deliver large-scale projects like and showcased the benefits of being part of Europe’s fusion supply chain.

In addition, Walter Tosto WTB shared the company’s successful experience in , manufacturing complex components such as the Vacuum Vessel.

It was great to open new conversations and see the strong interest from Romanian companies! 💬🤝

F4E and Amazemet are joining forces 🤝

Fusion For Energy has signed a collaboration agreement with the Polish firm, specialised in additive manufacturing and advanced materials.

This framework will allow the exchange of knowledge and best practices in areas of common interest.

It’s an opportunity to bring fresh expertise into fusion and help address complex manufacturing challenges, particularly in plasma-facing components like the first wall.

The agreement stems from F4E’s Call for Expression of Interest to strengthen ties with private fusion initiatives.

Fusion’s next generation steps up at JT-60SA! 🎓

Europe and Japan are investing in the talent that will shape the future of fusion.

This month, 22 students from Japan and Europe graduated from the 4th JT-60SA International Fusion School.

Over two weeks in Naka, they learned from experts about everything from plasma physics to tokamak design and operations, while getting a close-up look at one of the world’s most advanced fusion facilities.

And the learning doesn’t stop there. The JT-60SA Onsite Laboratory, now extended to Europe, invites students and early-career researchers to work in Naka alongside JT-60SA experts on specific research topics.

Both initiatives are coordinated by QST and EUROfusion, with the support of F4E, to train new experts to support JT-60SA, ITER and future reactors.

A massive industrial feat for Europe: our fifth and last Vacuum Vessel sector is ready for ITER. 🙌

F4E in collaboration with Ansaldo Energia, Westinghouse Electric Company, Walter Tosto Spa and ITER Organization, have completed and shipped sector 2. 🚢

The 500-tonne steel component will join eight other sectors to form the heart of the world’s largest fusion device.

Its size and requirements set an unprecedented manufacturing benchmark. But our supply chain rose to the challenge.

A journey of resilience and teamwork to deliver an extraordinary component on schedule.
