The Mediterranean faces mounting water challenges driven by climate change, environmental degradation and demographic pressures. Water stress is already a reality in all Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries, while 70% of Southern Europe’s population lives in areas with water stress in the summer. More than 180 million people in the region are classified as water poor.

Today, UfM Ministers launched the Rome Initiative, a scheme designed to facilitate the design, financing and management of sustainable water systems in the Mediterranean while contributing to the development of technical capacities.

The Union for the Mediterranean is an intergovernmental institution bringing together the European Union Member States and 16 countries from the Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean to promote dialogue and cooperation.

Water Ministers from the 43 UfM member states will meet in Rome for the Second UfM Ministerial Meeting on Water, nine years after the first Ministerial in Malta set the UfM Water Agenda in motion.

Ministers will set the region's priorities for the water related Sustainable Development Goals from 2026 to 2030, and endorse three strategic frameworks approved at the 15th Meeting of the UfM Regional Platform on Water: the Strategy for the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus in the Mediterranean Source to Sea Continuum, the UfM Recommendations on Water Finance, and the UfM Regional Strategic Framework for the Digitalisation of the Water Sector.

They will also launch the Rome Initiative on Water, designed to build technical capacity and help countries turn national plans into bankable project pipelines, and conceived as a Mediterranean contribution to the UN 2026 Water Conference.

The Ministerial is immediately followed by the Euro-Mediterranean Water Forum at La Nuvola, from 29 September to 2 October, co-organised by the UfM with the One Water Committee Italy and the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME).
