Meet Gary Dabasol, a 65-year-old man from Leyte in the Philippines who planted around 10,000 mangroves by hand to protect his home from typhoons.
For years he collected seedlings washed up by the tide, planted them along the coastline, and cared for them daily. His goal was simple, to create a natural barrier against storm surges and to help restore the marine ecosystem.
Mangroves not only protect communities from strong waves, they also provide shelter for fish and crabs, prevent soil erosion, and absorb carbon.
One personβs quiet dedication can make a real difference.

In certain rivers of Palawan, thousands of fireflies gather in mangrove trees and flash their lights in perfect unison β like a living constellation.
This rare phenomenon of synchronized bioluminescence is unique in Southeast Asia, and scientists believe it helps males attract females more effectively. Itβs one of the Philippinesβ most magical natural spectacles, often compared to Christmas lights floating in the dark.

Japan Builds 395 km Tsunami Wall with 9 Million Trees for Natural Coastal Defense
Japan has completed a massive 395-kilometer tsunami wall to safeguard coastal communities from future disasters.
Alongside the wall, 9 million trees have been planted, creating a natural barrier to absorb wave impact and prevent soil erosion.
This dual approach combines engineering strength with environmental resilience, offering long-term protection against rising sea levels and extreme weather.
Experts hail the project as a global model for disaster preparedness and eco-friendly infrastructure.
