HAPPENING NOW: Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier of the Philippine Embassy in Spain led the academic dialogue on “ASEAN in the Evolving Global Order: Navigating Peace, Prosperity and a People-Centered Future” at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid today, Tuesday, 13 October 2026.

Following the welcome remarks of Manuel Alcántara Plá, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, Ambassador Lhuillier delivered the opening remarks. Presentations were given by Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General Mark Francis C. Hamoy, Malaysian Ambassador H.E. Haznah Md Hashim, and Minister Counsellor Supamas Yunyasit of the Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid.

The dialogue is one of the key initiatives of the Philippines during its 2026 Chairship of the ASEAN Committee in Madrid (ACM). It brought together ASEAN diplomats, academics and students for an exchange of perspectives on ASEAN's role in an increasingly complex global environment, including regional peace and stability, economic cooperation and the aspirations of its people.

The event forms part of the Philippines' efforts to strengthen ASEAN's engagement with Spanish academic institutions and promote greater awareness and understanding of Southeast Asia.

The Philippines currently chairs the ASEAN Committee in Madrid, which serves as a platform for ASEAN diplomatic missions in Spain to advance cooperation, dialogue and ASEAN's collective engagement with Spanish institutions.
