Join us on our journey to discover the beauty of Oromia, Ethiopia's Abundance. Visit Oromia where the sheer diversity of the culture, people and landscape is sure to leave you astounded. Oromia's lush green rain forests in the west, its plains in the central highlands, the great rift valley and the massive mountain ranges to the east and south, are home to forests of wild coffee, crater lakes on top of mountains, ancient afro-alpine jungles, and freshwater, alkaline, and salty lakes teeming with more than 800 species of birds. Oromia is also home to mighty rivers like the Awash, Baro, and Wabi-Shebelle, and 4000m+ high plains you can drive to and camp at and where you can see endemic species like the Red Fox, the magnificent Black Maned Lion, and the Mountain Nyala. Oromia's southern plains and its northern rift valley are home to the Borana and Karrayyu people whose practice of the indigenous democratic system Gadaa predates any state in the land and is still intact today. But the story of Oromia goes even deeper, and we invite you to delight in the discovery of what this ancient land and people have in store.

GUWANDWA | THE NEW YEAR OF BENISHANGUL GUMUZ

Guwandwa is the New Year festival of the Gumuz people, a beautiful tradition passed down from generation to generation and preserved as a source of pride and identity within Benishangul Gumuz.

Yesterday, Guwandwa was celebrated at Adwa Museum, creating an opportunity to introduce and share the rich cultural heritage of Benishangul Gumuz with the wider community

It is a time to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new with hope and renewal. Families and communities come together to taste the seasonโ€™s first ripe crops, reconcile those who have been in disagreement, and receive blessings from elders for the year ahead. It is also a time when young men and women may become engaged or enter into marriage.

Beyond celebration, Guwandwa offers a vibrant expression of cultural values through traditional practices, music, dance, and games.

According to community elders, the festivities begin on the first day of โ€˜Qaammeeโ€™ (Pagume) and continue into the the harvest and post rainy season, reflecting a tradition observed since ancient times.

Most importantly, Guwandwa is a time to renew bonds of unity, love, forgiveness, and cooperation with the neighboring nations and peoples who have lived alongside the Gumuz community for centuries, strengthening the shared hope of building a peaceful and prosperous future together.
