Ethiopian Democracy Academy (EDAC) 14th Cohort Closing Ceremony
On 27 August 2026, the Ethiopian Democracy Academy (EDAC) celebrated the successful completion of its 14th cohort at Paradise Lodge in Arba Minch.
From 9-28 August 2026, 41 emerging political leaders from 26 political parties, including the ruling party, came together for an intensive learning and dialogue experience. The cohort included 15 women and 26 men, reflecting the importance of inclusive participation in shaping Ethiopia’s democratic future.
Throughout the training, participants deepened their understanding of key democratic and political issues while strengthening practical skills in leadership, communication, dialogue, and emotional intelligence. Beyond the classroom, EDAC also provided a safe space for participants from across the political spectrum to exchange perspectives, build trust, and strengthen relationships for constructive multiparty dialogue.
The closing ceremony opened with remarks by Dr. Yinebeb Nigatu, Country Director of NIMD Ethiopia, and was honoured by the presence of distinguished guests, including H.E. Ato Tesfaye Niway, Deputy Chairperson of National Election Board of Ethiopia NEBE የኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ ምርጫ ቦርድ; Ato Solomon Ayele, Chairperson of the የኢትዮጵያ ፖለቲካ ፓርቲዎች የጋራ ምክር ቤት-Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council; Dr. Abdulkadir Adem, Deputy Chairperson of the EPPJC; and Ato Awgechew Malede, Secretariat of the EPPJC.
The ceremony also brought together leaders and representatives of various political parties, including Dr. Belete Mola ( የአማራ ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄ / National Movement of Amhara ), Eyob Mesafent ( የኢትዮጵያ ዜጎች ለማኅበራዊ ፍትህ - ኢዜማ Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice ), Abreham Haymanot ( ኢሕአፓ/eprp ), Mulatu Gemechu (Oromo Federalist Congress - OFC), Mamushet Amare (All Ethiopian Unity Party (AEUP), and Yohannes Mekonnen of ( የኢትዮጵያ ዜጎች ለማኅበራዊ ፍትህ - ኢዜማ Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice ).
The speakers congratulated the graduates, highlighted the importance of investing in such initiatives, and encouraged them to put the knowledge, skills, and values gained through the Academy into practice within their respective political parties and communities. They emphasised that the true value of the EDAC experience lies not only in what participants learn during the programme, but also in how they apply and share that learning in their future political engagement.
The closing ceremony marked not only the completion of an intensive three-week learning journey, but also the beginning of a new chapter for the graduates as members of the growing EDAC alumni community. The ceremony was further enriched by three EDAC alumni, who shared their experiences and reflections on how the Academy has contributed to their personal and political journeys, inspiring the new graduates as they begin their own paths within the EDAC alumni network.
The EDAC 14 cohort was made possible with the generous support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ethiopia.
Congratulations to the EDAC 14 graduates!
