The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Governments of Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, is implementing the United Nations Development Account (UNDA) 17th Tranche Project, titled โ€œInnovative Climate Action to Accelerate Green and Inclusive Industrialisation in Southern Africa.โ€

As part of this project, ECA will convene a national workshop to review and validate the findings and recommendations of four regional studies:

1๏ธโƒฃ Advancing Green Industrialisation in Southern Africa for Inclusive Development and Transformation: Policy Options and Strategies

2๏ธโƒฃ Exploring Pathways to Achieve a Green Energy Transition and Promote Green Growth in Southern Africa

3๏ธโƒฃ Evaluating Sequencing Approaches for Upgrading Industries, Fostering Innovation, and Facilitating Technology Transfer in Southern Africa

4๏ธโƒฃ The Role of the Private Sector and MSMEs in Advancing the Circular Economy

The workshop will serve as a platform to translate evidence and policy recommendations into practical, scalable, and investment-ready solutions that strengthen Southern Africaโ€™s productive capacity, enhance climate resilience, expand regional trade, and create sustainable jobs.

Discussions will also address opportunities to accelerate green value chains, deploy renewable energy, foster innovation, support technology transfer, advance circular economy approaches, promote private sector development, and enhance regional trade integration.

How can Southern Africa leverage the green transition to enhance production, competitiveness, and exports?

At the National Workshop on Regional Studies on Innovative Climate Action to Accelerate Green and Inclusive Industrialisation in Southern Africa โ€“ Zambia, Mr. Malick KANE, a sustainable trade and technical cooperation expert from UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), emphasized the strong, mutually reinforcing relationship between green industrialisation, trade and climate action.

The key message was clear: trade is not only a result of green industrialisation but also a powerful enabler.

Access to regional and global markets expands opportunities for sustainable producers, attracts investment, creates economies of scale and strengthens participation in green value chains. Trade also enables access to cleaner technologies, renewable energy equipment, engineering services and knowledge.

An integrated approach can deliver:

๐Ÿ”น Greater policy coherence and resource mobilisation
๐Ÿ”น Wider adoption of low-carbon and climate-resilient technologies
๐Ÿ”น Stronger green industrial export capacity and market access
๐Ÿ”น Increased regional cooperation and competitiveness
๐Ÿ”น Sustainable value addition and low-carbon development.

Mr Kane also emphasised that policy coherence, green export capacity, market access, sustainable value addition and regional cooperation are essential for Southern Africa to benefit from emerging green markets.

The way forward is to align trade, climate, and industrial policies to produce more sustainably, increase value addition, strengthen competitiveness, and export greener products.

Green industrialisation is not only about reducing emissions; it also creates value, expands markets, and drives inclusive economic transformation.
