The UN System in Ethiopia is one of the largest in the world and covers both development and humanitarian assistance.

Ethiopia is a founding member of the United Nations. The UN Country Team (UNCT) in Ethiopia is composed of representatives of 29 UN funds and programmes and specialized agencies. Some of the UN agencies in the UNCT have regional mandate or act as liaison offices to the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union. The UN works through a harmonized assistance framework to support Ethiopia to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national development priorities.

The UN in Ethiopia Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ozonnia Ojielo engaged with the UN Secretary-General Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt to advance safer roads in through strengthening national frameworks, mobilizing stakeholders, and accelerating action to reduce severe traffic crashes in line with the UN’s Second Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030) which aims to reduce global road traffic deaths and injuries by at least 50% by 2030.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and Designated Official for Security in Ethiopia, Ozonnia Ojielo (PhD), together with the Chief Security Adviser, Prince Bruce, paid a courtesy call on the Commissioner of the Addis Ababa Police Commission, Lt. General Asrat Denero.

The UN in Ethiopia Head thanked the Commissioner for ensuring the safety and security of nearly 9,000 UN staff and dependants residing in Addis Ababa, as well as for the security support extended to the many UN visitors to Ethiopia for meetings and other official engagements.

The Commissioner assured the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the continued provision of a safe and secure environment for all residents of Addis Ababa, including the United Nations and its visitors.

The Commissioner General reiterated his commitment to sustaining the Federal Police’s support in ensuring the safety and security of UN operations in Ethiopia.
