Seychelles at the AU Assembly!

Seychelles, represented by Vice President Sebastien Pillay, reaffirmed its strong commitment to Africa’s shared priorities following the successful conclusion of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union.

The AU officially launched its 2026 theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063” a priority that strongly resonates with Seychelles as a water-dependent island nation.

The Assembly also marked the handover of the AU Chairmanship from João Lourenço of Angola to Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, who will lead the Union until February 2027.

Seychelles highlighted its commitment to addressing historical injustices through the declaration of 1st February as a public holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery.

Key discussions also covered peace and security, Africa’s push for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council, and the AU’s engagement with the G20.

On the margins, Vice President Pillay engaged with African leaders and institutions on strengthening collaboration and the strategic role of island States in Africa’s development.
