🇨🇦🇪🇹 Celebrating 60 Years of Canada–Ethiopia Relations 🇨🇦🇪🇹

At Addis Ababa University’s historic Ras Mekonnen Hall, we had the opportunity of reflecting on six decades of diplomatic relations between Canada and Ethiopia—a partnership built not only through formal diplomacy, but through people, knowledge, and shared purpose.

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1965, Canada and Ethiopia have worked together across peacekeeping, development, climate action, education, and multilateral cooperation. Ethiopia’s leadership in regional and global affairs, including peacekeeping and climate diplomacy, has long been recognized and valued in Canada.

A highlight of this enduring relationship is academic cooperation, particularly the nearly two decade collaboration between Addis Ababa University and Canadian institutions such as the University of Toronto. These partnerships have strengthened Ethiopia’s health system, trained generations of professionals, and demonstrated the power of truly mutual exchange.

At a time of global uncertainty and shifting international norms, Canada and Ethiopia share a commitment to values based realism, cooperation, and resilience. From climate action and food security to youth mobility and peacebuilding, our relationship continues to evolve from assistance to true partnership.

Above all, this relationship is sustained by people: students, scholars, diaspora communities, public servants, and citizens whose ties endure beyond politics and crises.

As we look to the future, Canada remains ready to build what comes next with Ethiopia—honestly, pragmatically, and together.
