🌾 Strengthening : Co-Creating the Future of Addis Ababa’s Farmers' Markets
We Recently conducted an impactful and collaborative workshop at the Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa, focusing on the "Living Lab on Secondary Agricultural Market Centers (Farmers' Markets) of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia."
The ATI co-organized the workshop with CIHEAM Bari and CISC - Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa
CISC - Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa, the initiative is proudly supported by the "Strategic Assistance to the Resilient Local Food Supply Chains Alliance" – Re.FOOD Project.
The workshop brought together representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, Ethiopian Cooperatives Commission, research institutions, development institutions, ATI, Addis Ababa Bureau of Trade, cooperatives, farmers, and businesses.
Using the Living Lab approach — with participatory methods including Backcasting and Brainwriting — participants moved beyond discussion into co-creation: envisioning a shared future for Addis Ababa's market centers, mapping current challenges, and generating prioritized solutions for action.
The workshop produced a shared vision and a set of prioritized solutions that will form the foundation of a Local Action Plan for strengthening Addis Ababa's farmers' market system.
A special thank you to Prof. Simona Giordano from CIHEAM Bari for joining us from Italy and guiding the process alongside local facilitators.
This is what food systems transformation looks like — built from the ground up, by the people who know it best.

For generations, wheat has been Ethiopia's agriculture lifeline, yet for millions of smallholder farmers who grow it, harvests rarely broke the cycle of struggle. Then the country launched a bold transformation, bringing improved seeds, modern techniques, and collective farming to rural doorsteps. Cluster farming became one of its most powerful chapters, turning individual hardship into shared strength. And for Aberashe Tilahun, a determined mother of five from the rolling farmlands of Hetosa Woreda in Guch Habe Badosa Kebele, that transformation would hit close to home.
She knew that life of quiet hardship all too well, years spent wrestling with soil that gave back far less than the labor she poured into it. No improved seeds, no modern guidance; just tradition, hard work, and the weight of five children depending on her. Twenty quintals per hectare was the ceiling she could never break through, and beneath it, every season felt like carrying a mountain on her back.
Then, in 2020, the Guch Habe Cluster was born. A collective of 109 farmers of 16 women and 93 men came together across 216 hectares of farmland with a shared vision for a better future. They were neighbors who deeply understood one another’s struggles and aspirations. United by purpose. Aberashe joined without hesitation, contributing 4 of her precious hectares to the collective.
What followed was more than a change in farming techniques, it was a transformation in mindset and opportunity. No longer farming alone, Aberashe had expert guidance, improved seeds, and the digital platforms of 8028 Farmers Hotline and 6077 for market information, the tools to make smarter, more confident decisions. Her harvests doubled, her confidence grew, and she expanded from 4 to 10 hectares, harvesting 400 quintals last season alone. But the true measure of her success isn't found in a ledger, it's found in her children. Two have graduated from university, one in Land Use Management, another in Pharmacy. Her sweat didn't just buy wheat. It bought futures.
She moved her family into Iteya town, built a commercial property in Huruta, and keeps cows producing milk every morning, a quiet reminder that her household now generates, not just survives. She dreams of owning a tractor and pulling others up the same path she climbed.
Aberashe is not a statistic. She is a mother, a farmer, a builder, and a believer and her story is not just about wheat. It is about dignity restored and futures transformed. One of countless lives reshaped by impacting farmers, uplifting communities, and advancing Africa's broader aspiration for food sovereignty and climate resilience.

🚜 🌾 🍅 We are pleased to share that the Council of Ministers has officially approved the draft proclamation on Farmers’ Agribusiness Companies (ABCs) — a major milestone toward transforming Ethiopia’s agriculture into a more competitive, business-oriented, and market-driven sector.
The proclamation provides a legal framework that will help address one of the longstanding challenges facing cluster farmers: limited bargaining power and weak market negotiation capacity. The proclamation is also expected to , , improve food security, and support the emergence of capable farmers into medium-scale agribusiness producers.
The ATI played a key role in preparing the proclamation and is currently implementing Farmers’ Agribusiness Companies (ABCs) as one of the flagship initiatives under the Agricultural Commercialization through Climate Smart and Inclusive Innovations ( ) program, with a target to establish #50 Agribusiness Companies across the country.

Youth-Led Enterprise Bu’ura Boru Showcases Agribusiness Innovation to ATI and Mastercard Foundation Delegation
On May 20, 2026, A high-level delegation from the Mastercard Foundation visited Buúra Boru, a youth-led agribusiness enterprise in Bishoftu, as part of a partner visit organized by the ATI through the Agriculture-focused Dignified Employment for Youth in Ethiopia (ADEY) Program.
The visit highlighted how partnerships between public and private sectors are creating dignified work opportunities for young people through agribusiness. It also provided the visiting delegation with an opportunity to witness firsthand how the ADEY program is supporting youth-led enterprises in transitioning into competitive, market-oriented businesses.
Buúra Boru is among the emerging youth enterprises that successfully entered export-oriented horticulture production through a public-private partnership approach. Working closely with Ethio VegFru, the enterprise has been able to access modern production technologies, technical support, and export market opportunities, enabling it to supply horticulture products to European and East African markets.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Mandefro Nigussie, CEO of the ATI, emphasized the importance of investing in youth-centered agribusiness initiatives that create sustainable and dignified jobs. He also highlighted ATI’s broader role in supporting agricultural transformation efforts in Ethiopia through innovation, partnerships, and market systems development.
During the engagement, the ADEY team presented program progress , lessons learned, and scalable practices that are contributing to stronger youth participation in agribusiness. Discussions also focused on the role of public-private partnerships in expanding opportunities for young people across agricultural value chains.
Youth members of Buúra Boru shared their personal journeys and reflected on how mindset change, entrepreneurship training, teamwork, and consistent institutional support helped them grow their enterprise. They also spoke about the support received through ADEY, local government actors, and their collaboration with Ethio VegFru private company.
The delegation further visited the enterprise’s operational facilities and received briefings on safeguarding and compliance practices, including childcare support, worker welfare services, occupational health measures, and environmental safety practices integrated into the enterprise’s operations.
The visit concluded with discussions on Buúra Boru’s future plans and its broader potential to grow into an independent agribusiness that creates sustainable opportunities for young people, particularly young women within the enterprise and across the wider community in the area.
In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the ADEY program is designed to create 611,343 dignified and fulfilling work opportunities for youth across Ethiopia—with 80% targeting young women, and specific inclusion of youth with disabilities (4%) and internally displaced youth (6%).

🐪 🌾 📲 The Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI), in partnership with federal ministries, regional governments, and international development partners today validated and launched the National Rangeland Health Monitoring System (NRMS) for Afar Region and Dire Dawa Administration during a high-level workshop in Semera, Afar Regional State.
🐪 🌾 📲 According to Dr Yoseph Mekasha, Director of the Livestock Commercialization program at the ATI, the digital, satellite-based platform, which is integrated with ground truth data, is designed to monitor and track rangeland health across Ethiopia’s pastoral and agro-pastoral areas, providing timely information and advisory service to support sustainable rangeland management, reseilent livestock production, and disaster response efforts.
🐪 🌾 📲 The workshop brings together senior leaders and experts from the ministries, ATI, regional government, development partners, and representatives from Somali, Oromia, and South Ethiopia regions as well as and Dire Dawa administration.
🐪 🌾 📲 H.E. Umer Nur, Vice President of the Afar Regional State, underscored that the innovative work being undertaken by ATI and its partners is immensely important for the effective management, utilization and administration of rangeland resources. He noted that these efforts are essential to improving the efficiency and productivity of the livestock sector and maximizing its potential. He further reiterated that the regional government is fully committed to taking maximum ownership to ensure the sustainability of the program.
🐪 🌾 📲 Pastoral and agro-pastoral systems cover nearly 61 percent of Ethiopia’s landmass and support the livelihoods of about 15 million people. The sector also contributes more than 90 percent of the country’s annual legal live-animal export earnings. However, recurring droughts, land degradation, invasive species such as Prosopis, and climate-related pressures continue to threaten rangeland resources.
🐪 🌾 📲 The Region’s Livestock and Fisheries Development Resoucrec Bureau head, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, on his part said the new system will provide evidence-based information to improve rangeland management and strengthen resilience in lowland areas. The platform will monitor land use changes, vegetation conditions, and the spread of Prosopis infestation, one of the major causes of rangeland degradation in Ethiopia.
🐪 🌾 📲 ATI has already operationalized the system in Borana Zone of Oromia Region, while the Afar and Dire Dawa platforms are now ready for deployment.
🐪 🌾 📲 The system is expected to serve pastoralists and agro-pastoralists, researchers, academicians, policymakers, and development practitioners through ATI’s 8028 digital platform and other related channels. Stakeholders attending the workshop are also expected to provide feedback aimed at refining and scaling up the initiative nationwide.
🐪 🌾 📲 Senior experts say the initiative will play a key role in improving livestock productivity, protecting livelihoods, and supporting Ethiopia’s broader sustainable development and food security goals.
