"Ethiopia and Egypt, linked but also divided by the Nile, were in contact since the dawn of history. They were mutually interdependent. Egypt's prosperity depended on the Nile water and silt from Ethiopia, which occurred Mainly in the summer for agriculture. Christian Ethiopia depended on the Coptic Church of Egypt, from where the Ethiopian _abun_(Patriarch) was selected. Egypt was thus dependent on Ethiopia for its material existence, and Ethiopia was dependent on Egypt for its spiritual existence (page 25)."

24 - 30 October International Week of Disarmament

"We a real and effective Disarmament achieved and the funds now spent in the arms race devoted to the amelioration of man's state; were we to concentrate only on the peaceful uses of nuclear knowledge, how vastly and in short a time might we change the conditions of mankind. This should be our goal."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
04 October 1963
Address to the United Nations General Assembly

" In the area of general and complete Disarmament, although some progress has been made which we all have acclaimed as showing signs of a breakthrough, it still remains true that we live not only with the danger of a nuclear conflict hanging over us, but are also helpless witnesses of the wanton waste of world resources which could otherwise be used to improve the lot of men everywhere."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
24 October 1970
At the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations

"Ethiopia has always maintained that security can ultimately be attained with the complete destruction of all nuclear weapons and the prohibition of their further manufacture in a system of general and complete Disarmament. Toward this end, Ethiopia has proposed in various international forums the signing of a convention prohibiting the use of nuclear weapons."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
08 October 1971
Reply to a Toast - China

"It is gratifying to note that some progress has been made in arms control measures. However, there still remains much to be done to achieve total Disarmament. While vast financial and other resources are being wasted for production of arms of destruction, the gap between the industrialized and the developing nations remains as wide as ever. There is no doubt that narrowing this gap is a prerequisite to ensure world peace and security."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
3 June 1972
At Banquet for Bhutto

"Ethiopia is, by her own choice, a non-aligned state. Our policies on the vexatious international issues of the day have been declared to all, and our adherence to them is steadfast: the urgent imperative of universal Disarmament, the settlement of disputes by peaceful negotiations; the supremacy of reason and logic over force and irrationally."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
2 November 1966
Ethiopia's World Position

"We are convinced that in order to save our planet from total destruction every effort and all peace-loving nations both big and small, towards the attainment of total and complete Disarmament, and to see to it that the manifold gifts of the atom are used, instead, for the eradication of disease and poverty and the betterment of mankind."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
27 February 1967
In the Kremlin, Moscow

"Disarmament must be achieved not only because in this fashion will the threat of a world holocaust be dispelled, but, equally because only through a drastic reduction in the military budgets of the great powers can the vast resources required to raise all of mankind to the level of free men be freed for these purposes."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
3 September 1961
Addressing the Belgrade Conference

"It is, therefore, Our sincere wish that efforts will continue so as to bring about a negotiated settlement in Disarmament and other matters that are a source of danger to world peace."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
15 June 1960
Second Africa Conference

"Disarmament and the banning of nuclear tests remain as problems affecting all of mankind, Africas not excepted."

HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I
26 January 1962
To The Lagos Summit

"I would mention briefly today two particular issues which are of deep concern to all men: Disarmament and the establishment of true equality among men. Disarmament has become the urgent imperative of our time, I do not say this because I equate the absence of arms to peace, or because I believe that bringing an end to the nuclear arms race automatically guarantees the peace, or because the elimination of nuclear warheads from the arsenals of the world will bring in its wake that change in attitude requisite to the peaceful settlement of disputes between nations. Disarmament is vital today, quite simply, because of the immense destructive capacity of which men dispose."

"When Emperor Haile Selassie entered the Ethiopian scene, he pushed for the expansion of education increasing the national enrollment to 5000 and the schools to 30 before the Ethio-Italian war. He lived to see the enrollment of a few thousand grow in 1970-1971 to 795 000 students, enrolled in 1530 government and 1304 non-government schools. He was convinced that *education is a proven medicine*. The Emperor understood education as an investment in the future, and, as such, he made it of the highest priority. He was convinced, and rightly so, that those who had the opportunity for education, especially those with specific skills, would determine the country's destiny. Education was the means for national unity and the key to development. He deemed its promotion as his special, lifelong responsibility. The Emperor remained 'possessive' of the education sector, directly involving himself and keeping the ministerial portfolio for himself until expansion of the educational system forced him to delegate responsibilities. The Emperor's interest was enduring, and he made available significant resources of his own as well towards the realization of his commitment. In addition to starting one of the most productive public schools, Tafari Makonnen School on 27 April 1925 when he was crown prince, the Emperor gave his former palace to the national university, and launched humanitarian activities that addressed needs of the physically challenged. His interest was not confined to Ethiopia. At the Emperor's instigation, Ethiopia offered one hundred scholarships to students from other African countries for study at the then Haile Selassie I University (Pages 18-19)."
