U.S. Mission to the African Union Chargé d’ Affaires Walter Parrs met with AU Economic Development Trade, Tourism Industry & Minerals Commissioner Francisca Belobe to discuss African Union and U.S. priorities under the 2026 U.S. Presidency and opportunities to advance the US-AU Strategic Infrastructure and Investment Working Group.

At the Africa Day Forum hosted by the African diplomatic corps in Washington, D.C., Nick Checker, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa and Foreign Assistance, highlighted the United States' commitment to a partnership with Africa based on trade, investment, and shared interests.

“We are in the midst of a fundamental change in the relationship between the United States and African countries, from one based on dependency towards one based on trade, investment, and mutually beneficial partnership in the service of our shared goals.”

“As part of the commitment to support up to 50 Ebola response clinics, U.S. assistance has enabled International Medical Corps (IMC) to establish five transit centers and a dedicated Ebola Treatment Unit to isolate and treat patients. IMC is also scaling up infection prevention and control practices at 43 health clinics to help prevent transmission, screen suspect cases, and transport patients to dedicated Ebola treatment facilities.”

This Memorial Day, as the United States marks 250 years of freedom, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation and our ideals.

Their courage and service continue to inspire generations and remind us that freedom endures because of those willing to protect it.

Chargé Walter Parrs and His Excellency Former President Uhuru Kenyetta had a productive discussion on the African Union-led mediation for peace in the Great Lakes region, and its coordination with the Washington and Doha processes.

Former President Kenyatta’s commitment to regional stability strengthens efforts toward sustainable, durable peace in eastern DRC.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights – Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” These words from 1776 still inspire freedom-seekers worldwide today.

The Department of State strongly urges Americans not to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, or Uganda for any reason and to reconsider travel to Rwanda due to the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus disease outbreak in the region. The Department’s Travel Advisories for DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda are now Level 4 – Do Not Travel, and the Travel Advisory for Rwanda is Level 3 – Reconsider Travel. The United States is rapidly supporting the Ebola outbreak response in the DRC and Uganda by funding up to 50 treatment clinics in affected regions to strengthen emergency screening, triage, isolation, and frontline care.

Working with global health and humanitarian partners, including UN OCHA-managed CERF pooled funds, the United States is helping deliver life-saving assistance quickly and effectively to communities at greatest risk.
