Every gate of Harar Jugol has a story, and today, we take you to the second gate and the story behind it Bedri Beri, one of the five historic gates of the ancient walled city.

Known by different names, including Karra Budawa, Buda Ber, Bab al-Hakim and the Hakim Gate, Bedri Beri carries a story shaped by faith, craftsmanship and cultural memory.

The gate is associated with the skilled artisan communities who historically lived around this area, including metalworkers, silversmiths, goldsmiths and potters. Their remarkable craftsmanship became part of the identity and living heritage of Harar.

Today, Bedri Beri stands as a reminder of the artistic excellence, traditions and stories that have shaped Harar for generations.

Step through Argoba Beri, one of the five historic gates of Harar Jugol, where centuries of culture, faith and coexistence still live.

Known as Karra Erer, Erer Ber and Bab al-Rahma the Gate of Mercy, its many names reflect the multicultural spirit of Harar. Facing the lands of the Argoba people, the gate has long connected communities, pilgrims, traders and travelers with the heart of the ancient city.

Today, Argoba Beri remains one of the sacred sites of the Shuwalid Festival, inscribed on UNESCOโ€™s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2023.
