To Mr. Higashimori Shinji,

On this special occasion of your birthday, the Reporting Network and Facilities team and work colleague, we extend our heartfelt wishes to you.
Though you are far from home in Japan, we hope you feel the warmth of friendship and appreciation here in Fiji.

Your leadership and dedication in the JICA-funded project, “The Development of Regional Centres for the Improvement of Meteorological Services and Disaster Risk Reduction in the Pacific Islands”, have been invaluable. This initiative is strengthening resilience, enhancing service delivery, and safeguarding communities across the region — and your role as Project Site Manager has been central to its success.

May this year bring you continued health, happiness, and fulfillment, both personally and professionally. We are grateful for your commitment and the positive impact you continue to make in the Pacific.

Happy Birthday, Mori-san!

Fiji Meteorological Service Scientific Officers Inoke Yauvoli and Orisi Naba are currently in the Philippines participating in the Hydrological Technician Course (HTC), strengthening technical knowledge and regional collaboration in hydrology and flood forecasting.

Following the completion of the six-week theoretical phase of the training, participants were given the opportunity to visit the Angat Dam in Bulacan Province, north of Metro Manila, before commencing the three-month on-the-job training phase.

Situated at an elevation of over 150 metres, Angat Dam plays a critical role in hydro power generation, water supply, and flood control for the densely populated capital region of the Philippines. The dam also operates its own flood forecasting division to monitor high water releases during severe weather events, helping protect downstream communities from flooding.

Participants were also exposed to the dam’s extensive hydrometric and warning network, including long-serving Japan Radio Corporation (JRC) equipment installed in the 1980s that continues to operate effectively today — highlighting both the technical capability and durability of the system.

The Fiji Meteorological Service remains committed to building technical capacity and strengthening regional partnerships to enhance weather, climate, and hydrological services for Fiji and the Pacific.
