When criminals pretend to be someone else online to trick people into sending intimate photos or videos, then demand money or threaten to share those images, it’s called financially motivated sextortion.

Sextortion is a crime in Fiji. Depending on the circumstances, offenders may face prosecution under the Online Safety Act 2018 and Crimes Act 2009.

If this happens to you, don’t pay. Save the evidence and report it.

People in Fiji deserve to be heard in global discussions about online safety. Their experiences show where protections are falling short and what needs to change.

Online Safety Commissioner Filipe Batiwale brought this perspective to “Mobilizing Leadership to Address Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence”, hosted by All In: Global Leaders for Ending Gender-Based Violence.

He shared OSC’s work supporting people affected by online abuse, Fiji’s ongoing law review, and the challenges smaller countries face in getting help for their communities.

These contributions help inform international efforts to make technology safer, including calls for technology companies to build stronger protections into their products from the start.

Vinaka vakalevu to the MYF at Centenary Church for the warm welcome and the opportunity to share about Online Safety.

During MYF Week, the focus was on “Think Before You Click” protecting personal information, being productive and positive online, understanding misinformation and disinformation.

We also discussed po*******hy and its potential impacts on young people, encouraging our youth to make responsible and informed choices online.

As the MYF Week theme reminds us, “Jesus is the Living Hope.” May that hope guide how we live, speak and treat others both online and offline.
