The staff members of the Ministry of Forestry in the Northern Division received an important reminder today from the Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, Mr. Saimone Tauvoli. He emphasized the significance of maintaining honesty and integrity in all aspects of their work, urging them to uphold these values consistently, whether during official duties or in their personal conduct.
During his visit to Labasa, where he toured the Fisheries and Forestry offices in the division, Mr. Tauvoli expressed appreciation for the dedication and efforts of the staff. He acknowledged the vital role they play in managing and conserving the country's forestry resources and thanked them for their contributions.
However, he also took this opportunity to encourage the staff to step outside their usual routines and comfort zones. He suggested that gaining experience in other divisions within the forestry sector would help foster a deeper understanding of the sector as a whole. By working across different areas, staff members could develop a more comprehensive perspective and enhance their skills, ultimately strengthening the sectorโs collective efforts.
Furthermore, Mr. Tauvoli assured the staff of his support and openness. He made it clear that he is always available to listen to their concerns, grievances, or suggestions. This gesture underscores his commitment to fostering a supportive and transparent work environment where staff feel valued and heard. Overall, his visit aimed to motivate the team, promote integrity, and encourage collaborative growth within the forestry sector.

The Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, Mr. Saimone Tauvoli, conducted an official visit to the offices of the Fisheries and Forestry departments in the Northern Division today. This visit aimed to assess ongoing operations, engage with staff, and identify areas for improvement within these critical sectors.
He was accompanied by several senior officials, including the Deputy Conservator of Forests for Operations and Services, Mr. Apisai Rinamalo; Principal Economic Planning Officer, Mrs. Alumeci Rokobiau; and Principal Fisheries Officer for the North, Mr. Tekata Toaisi during the meeting at the Forestry office. Their collective presence underscored the importance of this visit and the ministryโs commitment to strengthening fisheries and forestry management in the region.
During the visit, Acting Principal Forestry Officer for the North, Mr. Uraia Racule, delivered a detailed update on forestry operations within the Northern Division. He outlined current activities, challenges, and achievements, while also seeking guidance and support from Mr. Tauvoli to enhance operational effectiveness. The discussion emphasized the need to improve compliance with regulations, streamline service delivery, and bolster overall operational capacity to meet the regionโs forestry management objectives.
Key topics of discussion included operational logistics, staffing levels, transportation infrastructure, staff accommodations, extension services, and the Rural Development Fund (RDF) programs. They also reviewed licensing processes, production activities, sawmill operations, timber treatment facilities, and community development initiatives, highlighting the interconnectedness of these components in sustainable forest management.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Tauvoli took a tour of the Vatunibale Government quarters, where forestry officers are stationed. Mr. Racule had raised concerns about the state of the quarters, noting that the aging infrastructure and deferred maintenance have compromised living conditions. The visit underscored the need for urgent renovation and infrastructural improvements to ensure that staff accommodations meet acceptable standards and support effective service delivery.

NATI, this week, will become the hub of Fijiโs growing agarwood industry as the Fiji Agarwood Growers Association leads the organization of the countryโs first dedicated agarwood inoculation training for growers from across the nation, with strong support from the Ministry of Forestry.
The week-long program will run from 2nd to 6th February 2026 at NATI and brings together 55 agarwood growers from the Central, Eastern and Western Divisions, Bua Province in the Northern Division and participants travelling from outer islands including Gau. The impressive turnout reflects the rising interest in agarwood as a high-value forestry crop and the eagerness of farmers to gain the technical knowledge needed to access international markets.
The training was officially opened by the Acting Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry, Mr. Saimone Tauvoli, who acknowledged FAGAโs leadership in bringing growers together and assured participants of the Governmentโs continued support to the association and the development of the agarwood industry in Fiji.
The event was commemorated with a ceremonial agarwood tree planting by the chief guest, symbolizing the promising future of the industry in the country. FAGA engaged two agarwood experts from the Philippines, Mr. Danilo Virtudazo and Mr. Rico Peligro, to facilitate the training, bringing valuable international expertise directly to Fijian farmers with logistical and technical support from the Ministry of Forestry.
Many agarwood trees in Fiji are now approaching 15 years of age but have not been inoculated. Without proper inoculation, these trees are unable to produce the valuable resin required to create Oud which is the highly prized fragrant product demanded by overseas buyers. Inoculation is the process that stimulates resin formation within the tree, directly determining its market value.
Addressing this gap is essential if Fiji is to position itself as a credible supplier of agarwood products to international markets. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Forestry continues to advance research and development activities related to agarwood. Current initiatives include DNA analysis to determine the exact species of agarwood planted in Fiji, mapping and stocktaking of existing agarwood resources, and building national capacity in modern inoculation techniques.
This training marks an important milestone in Fijiโs journey toward establishing a structured, knowledge-based agarwood industry. With FAGA taking the lead in organizing growers and knowledge-sharing, and with continued government support, Fiji is taking significant steps toward unlocking the full commercial potential of agarwood for export markets.

The refresher training for logging supervisors reaffirmed the critical role of monitoring and evaluation in ensuring full compliance with the Forest Harvesting Code of Practice. Effective supervision of harvesting operations is essential to reducing forest degradation, protecting vital ecosystem services, and maintaining forest carbon stocks, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation and Fijiโs international climate commitments.
The training reinforced alignment with Fijiโs National Development Plan by promoting sustainable timber production, minimizing environmental and disaster risks, and supporting long-term livelihoods for forest-dependent communities.
Logging supervisors were reminded of their frontline responsibility in enforcing approved harvest plans, protecting buffer zones, ensuring safe and environmentally sound operations, and maintaining occupational health and safety standards.
Strengthened monitoring and timely corrective actions will enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability in the forestry sector, ensuring that Fijiโs forest resources are responsibly managed for present and future generations.
