ONE VOTE ONE VALUE, ANOTHER FIJI FIRST MP ENTERS PARLIAMENT WITH LOW VOTES
I understand Howard Politini Junior is tipped to be the next Fiji First MP to enter Parliament. While this is in accordance with the current ‘electoral system’, it does once again raise the question of ‘one vote one value’.
Mr. Politini enters with 550 votes polled. Yet there are 23 other candidates from all parties who are excluded even though they polled more than 550 votes and up to 1,014 votes. A further 22 candidates who polled from 1014 to 2,054 votes are also shut out.
So 45 candidates received more votes than Mr. Politini but are excluded from Parliament. But he’s not alone and it’s not his doing. Consider as well that there are 10 others sitting in Parliament with fewer votes than those currently excluded. The Fiji First Government has the nerve to call this sort of warped system of parliamentary representation ‘Equal Citizenry’ ‘One Vote One Value’.
In my view, each person who enters Parliament should get in on the votes he or she received and not be carried on the vote of someone else. If we want a Presidential style election based on voting for one person, then let’s have it. But if it’s about 50 representatives of the people, then each member should be carried into Parliament on the votes of their electorate.
Ro Teimumu Kepa should have been Prime Minister of a multi-party government if there was a one vote one value system in place. These results are based on the highest 50 candidates’ official polling results.
Fiji First obviously did its homework and realized it had to adopt a system that centered on Frank Bainimarama and concentrated everything on him. That’s why he opened everything and anything and all the advertising and promo was concentrated on him. This is why the entire process of elections had to be controlled if they were going to be able to ‘tweak’ the results. They also knew members of the international community were likely to have their ‘blinkers’ on.
Cheers
