UN AIDS Pacific

Outside the UN House in Suva, the UN and Fiji flags are lowered to half‑mast in honour of the late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, former President of the Republic of Fiji.

We remember his lifetime of service and his close work with the United Nations — from leading Fiji’s first peacekeeping battalion in Lebanon to his advocacy as UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for the Pacific.

We stand with the people of Fiji in mourning his passing and honouring his memory.

The United Nations in Fiji joins the Nation in mourning the passing of His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, the former President of the Republic of Fiji.

He was a distinguished leader whose lifetime of service leaves an enduring legacy for Fiji and the Pacific. A statesman of integrity and humility, Ratu Epeli dedicated his life to public service, regional cooperation, and the wellbeing of all Fijians. He served with integrity and humility across many roles, including as President, Speaker of Parliament, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, and served as Commanding Officer of the first Fijian battalion participating in a United Nations peacekeeping mission, in Lebanon in 1978 (UNIFIL-PIO).

His leadership was grounded in unity, inclusivity, and dignity for all. The United Nations had the privilege of working closely with him over many years.

As UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for the Pacific, he championed a compassionate and inclusive response to HIV, challenged stigma and discrimination, and elevated the voices of those most affected. He remained a steadfast advocate until his passing.

His voice carried moral clarity, authority, and humanity, reminding us of our shared responsibility to uplift one another.

At this time of profound loss, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to the people of Fiji.

It stands for Undetectable = Untransmittable.

When a person living with HIV is on effective treatment and their viral load is undetectable, they cannot pass on HIV.

POWER TO LIFE-A handbook for people newly diagnosed with HIV in Fiji.

This booklet was developed by the Rainbow Pride Foundation in collaboration with the Believers Support Group of PLHIV, FJN+ Fiji Network of People Living with HIV, UNAIDS Pacific and the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services HIV HUB Medical Officers. It is adapted from the National Association for People Living with HIV Australia (NAPWHA) with the support from ASHM. It was contextualised to the Fijian context with funding assistance from the New Zealand High Commission in Suva, Fiji.
