🇫🇷 Il y a 112 ans, le 21 octobre 1914, le beffroi d’Arras est détruit. 🗼

🇬🇧 112 years ago, on 21st October 1914, the belfry of Arras was destroyed. 🗼
At the start of the war, the German army's advance was spectacular! In just a few weeks, it crossed Belgium and northern France. The Kaiser's troops made their first incursion into the town of Arras on 30th August 1914.
But in September 1914 the Battle of the Marne forced the Germans to recall their troops and Arras was once again under French control.
The respite was short, the Artois was once again at the heart of the fighting during the ‘Race to the Sea’, and the enemy was back in front of Arras on 2nd October.
The destruction of the town began on 6th October when the division of Général Barbot succeeded in containing the German assault to the east of Arras. The church spires and the belfry served as observation posts for the French troops. These points became the main targets for German bombardment to neutralise the watchtowers and ensure that their movements were as discreet as possible.
Between 6th and 8th October 1914, German shells hit their targets and the buildings were useless to French observers. A new attack was launched on 20th October, but the belfry finally fall on 21st October.
Arras was hit by German bombs until 30th September 1918. 80% of the town was destroyed, and it took several years to rebuild the capital of Artois. It was not until 1932 that the Town Hall and its belfry once again took pride of place on the Petite Place.
