🇫🇷 Planning a change of status in France? Timing matters!

Your current visa or titre de séjour’s expiry date is a key starting point—but the application route and your préfecture’s instructions matter too.

✅ Between 2 and 4 months before expiry?
This is the submission window for many applications. Check the requirements for your new status and get your documents ready early.

⏳ Less than 2 months left?
Act promptly! Check the procedure that applies to your situation before deciding whether to submit a change of status or renew your current permit.

💬 Unsure when or how to apply? Get in touch - we’ll help you work out your next steps.

🇫🇷 Moving to France and planning to work—but unsure which visa is right for you?

Start with these three questions:

🧑‍💼 Will you be working for an employer? If so, will they need to apply for work authorisation?

👩‍💻 Will you be self-employed or freelancing?

🏢 Will you be starting or taking over a business?

Your answers will help narrow down your visa options. There are also specific Talent routes for eligible employees, entrepreneurs and other professionals—so the details matter!

Starting your own business in France? 🇫🇷💻

One of the first things you’ll need is a business address.

When registering as self-employed, your business needs an official French address. This is where your business is legally based and where important correspondence may be sent.

📮 But if you have only just arrived in France, are staying in temporary accommodation, or don’t yet have a permanent French address, a domiciliation service can provide an official business address so you can move forward with your registration.

A small but important detail to sort out before registering your business in France!

Renewing your visa or titre de séjour? 🇫🇷📄

If you’re asked to prove your healthcare coverage, simply having applied for French Social Security isn’t enough.

You’ll need to be able to show that you’re fully covered, normally with an attestation de droits confirming your rights with Assurance Maladie are open.

⚠️ If your French healthcare coverage isn’t in place by the time of your renewal, you may need to take out private health insurance in the meantime.

Temporary policies do exist, and some can later be converted into a mutuelle once your French healthcare rights are active.

This is why we recommend getting your Social Security application underway as early as possible, don’t wait until renewal time!

Moving to France with your pets? 🐶🐱🇫🇷

Bringing your four-legged family members along can be more complicated than you might expect!

From microchips and rabies vaccinations to health certificates, travel routes and transport companies, there’s a lot to organise and the timelines can be very strict. ⏰

Some steps need to be completed weeks in advance, while others must be done within a specific window before travel. Get the timing wrong and your pet’s journey could be delayed.

When you’re already juggling visas, accommodation and removals, it’s another piece of the relocation puzzle that needs careful planning.

🇫🇷 Titre de séjour renewal coming up? Take a breath 💛

It’s natural to feel nervous when your life in France depends on an application. But a renewal doesn’t have to mean sleepless nights!

A good starting point is checking that you:
👉 Meet the conditions for your particular residence permit
👉 Have up-to-date supporting documents
👉 Can demonstrate your resources, healthcare cover and accommodation where required
👉 Apply within the correct timeframe

A change in circumstances doesn’t automatically mean a refusal—but it may mean you need different supporting evidence.

Every situation is different, so we can’t promise an outcome. We can help you understand what’s needed and prepare your application with confidence ✨

🇫🇷 SIREN vs SIRET — what’s the difference?

If you’ve set up a business in France, you’ll probably have come across both of these numbers… and it’s very easy to get them confused!

👉 Your SIREN is a 9-digit number that identifies your business.

👉 Your SIRET is a 14-digit number that identifies a specific establishment of that business.

Your SIRET is actually made up of: Your 9-digit SIREN + a 5-digit NIC

So, the easy way to remember it:

💡 SIREN = the business
📍 SIRET = the establishment

Your SIREN normally stays the same throughout the life of your business, whereas your SIRET can change if you move your business to a new address.

And if a business has several establishments, it can have several SIRETs, but only one SIREN.

🏡 Moved house in France? Don’t forget to update your address!

If you move after validating your visa or while holding a titre de séjour, you’ll need to declare your change of address.

In most cases, this will be done through ANEF. However, if your titre isn’t managed through ANEF or you don’t have access to an ANEF account, you may need to declare the change directly through your préfecture, following their procedure.

And there’s another important thing to remember 👇

📍 A new address can also mean a new préfecture.

If you move to a different département, you may now fall under a completely different préfecture, and procedures can vary from one to another.

So when you move:

➡️ Declare your change of address
➡️ Check which préfecture your new address falls under
➡️ Familiarise yourself with their procedures, especially if you have a renewal coming up
➡️ Keep good proof of your new address ready

A house move doesn’t just mean a new address, it can also mean a new administration and new procedures to get used to! 🇫🇷

⏰ Keep an eye on your ANEF deadlines 🇫🇷

If you receive a request for additional documents as part of your French residency or citizenship application, make sure you check the deadline carefully.

For example, you might be given 30 days to provide the additional information. This is an extension of time to complete your application, but it’s important that you respond within the timeframe given.

If you don’t provide the requested documents before the deadline, your application will be closed and you will need to submit a new application.

Our advice is simple: as soon as you receive a request for additional documents, check exactly what’s needed, make a note of the deadline and start gathering everything as soon as you can.

Some documents, translations or certificates can take a little time to obtain, so it’s always better to give yourself plenty of time 🇫🇷

Moving to France? 🇫🇷 Don’t leave your important documents until the last minute!

Before you make the move, we recommend ordering new, full copies of your key civil status documents, such as:

📄 Birth certificates
💍 Marriage certificate
👶 Children’s birth certificates

Depending on which country issued your documents, we’d also recommend having them apostilled before you move to France. Requirements vary depending on the country and the French administrative procedure, but getting this sorted before you move can save a lot of hassle later!

You may need these documents for things like your titre de séjour renewal, social security/Carte Vitale application, citizenship or other French admin procedures.

✨ Moving to France and not sure which documents you’ll need, or whether they need an apostille? Get in touch and we can help you get prepared.
