Last week the second part of the National Food Strategy (NFS) was published and Carbon Brief have reviewed it. Since 2008, the economy as a whole had decreased emissions by a third but the food sector is lagging behind with a 13% decrease. The strategy states that 20% of land needs to be rewilded or converted to meet the 2050 net zero pledge. There are opportunity costs in the plan and concerns that the assumptions made now will not be valid in the future. The whole question of food production and climate change is only touched on briefly in most strategies as it is so incredibly complex and with massive social impacts that no one rally wants to address. The solutions discussed here seem to be more focused on big business than on the small and local. It is a massive problem to sort out but this has some interesting analysis. https://www.carbonbrief.org/qa-will-englands-national-food-strategy-help-tackle-climate-change?fbclid=IwAR3dHOb654weBwU6poQ0bWfRxA8nGgjwCArW6rhAtVGtc8hPTWYHeXgaTLo
Q&A: Will England’s National Food Strategy help tackle climate change? - Carbon Brief
The aim of the National Food Strategy is to provide a roadmap for transforming the food system from its current state to one that is healthier for the population and the planet.

Meet the author of “the most important book on climate politics since Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything”.
Kim Stanley Robinson will be Labour International For a Green New Deal’s guest on January 8th (provisional time 19.00 UTC, link to follow).
The Swedish ecologist Andreas Malm has called Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future “the most important book on climate politics since Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything”. That such a book should come from one of the living legends of science fiction should perhaps not be surprising: at a point in time where it seems easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, it falls to visionaries like Robinson to point the way.
The Ministry for the Future starts with a premise which, as 350.org founder Bill Mckibben puts it, “is fictional only in that it hasn’t happened yet.” India experiences a “wet bulb” heatwave event in which millions die. This triggers a variety of reactions across the globe, the most significant being the UN’s activation of a clause in the Paris agreement which allows it to create a department charged with representing the interests of future generations - the eponymous Ministry for the Future.
The solutions and responses which are generated by this ministry - in tandem with an unofficial “dark wing” as the climate crisis deepens - provide a vision of a future in which we reimagine everything from the economy to migration. What makes this vision so exhilarating is that there is nothing in it which does not already exist today - either in microcosm, or as a serious policy or research suggestion. We already have the answers, it’s just a question of believing that they can work!
