We would like to introduce our new intern Mara Kamerling. Mara studies Cultural History and Comparative Literature at the Utrecht University.

We were invited to visit one of our beautiful nominations to the World Heritage List! The New Dutch Waterline made use of our best ally to defend the Netherlands: a layer of water of 50 cm - too shallow for ships and too deep for men on horses - would keep the enemy at bay. Forts reinforced vulnerable points. Nowadays they are a beautiful example of living heritage.

Today is ! Freedom of expression is one of the Dutch Human Rights priorities, and UNESCO is an essential partner to protect journalists, internet freedom and access to information. This year, World Press Freedom Day is celebrated in Ethiopia, with a focus on the role of media in elections and democracy. Ambassador Wesseling is in Addis Ababa on behalf of the Netherlands (Follow him on Twitter!: www.twitter.com/hcwesseling). The Netherlands is looking forward to host the next World Press Freedom Day in 2020.

"Secundary education increases the chance of sustainable peace by fifty percent", said Kate Radford, Programme Director of War Child Holland. Yesterday, she and dr. Faiza Haissain received the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Alkhalifa Prize for the use of ICT in Education.

War Child Holland's winning "Can't Wait to Learn" programme is currently operating in Sudan, Jordan, Lebanon and Uganda and makes it possible for children in conflict areas to learn with educational games on tablets. "Few geologists have been introduced to the concept of sustainability during their studies" said Brigitte Vlaswinkel, the Chair of UNESCO's International Geosciences Council (IGCP). Last Thursday, she presented a new vision for UNESCO's geoscience projects. Ambassador Hans Wesseling opened the meeting with some concrete examples of the impact of climate change on peoples livelihoods.

This year 2019 is the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, which was inaugurated at UNESCO last Tuesday. 150 years after the discovery of the Periodic System by Dmitri Mendeleev, world-renowned scientists were invited to speak about the prospects of current scientific endeavours. Among them was prof. Ben Feringa, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Sometimes UNESCO World Heritage Sites can change a little. Yesterday, the Netherlands presented an extension of the already listed Defense Line of Amsterdam. Built between 1815 and 1940, The Dutch Water Defense Lines form a complete defence system that extends over 200 km along the edge of the administrative and economic heartland of Holland.
