The ICA Congress is coming to an end tomorrow. It has been my pleasure to represent the interests of city and local archives on behalf of the Section for Local, Municipal and Territorial Archives. The overarching theme of this grand event in Abu Dhabi has been ‘Enriching Knowledge Societies’ and I have tried to voice the contributions of our archives in that respect at the Executive Board Meeting, with a Lightning Talk called ‘Local archives represent all of us’, at the ICA Booth and with a paper ‘New Digital Approaches to empowering Local Communities at West European City Archives’ at a panel about collective memory. There was time also for a Business Meeting. The results of this will be communicated to members soon in details, but the mainline was preparing for the ICA Conference in Barcelona 2025. We will invite members of SLMT to meet in-between, hopefully in Catalonia in 2024, and discuss subjects such as making city council minutes and protocols available, managing photographic and visual records. Members, stay tuned – thanks for your interest in SLMT.

Vacation memories

I often drop by the local archives when on vacation. Sometimes planned and settled in advance, but most often I just walk in from the street. I like to see archives as an important part of the leisure and tourist sector that serves both locals and visitors. And happily, more and more archives developed visitors’ centers, exhibitions, digital services, or the like – or just simply give people a warm and service-minded welcome.

This summer I was in Lisbon with my family. Lisbon has a rich treasury of archives. Some hold records from religious institutions, the Port of Lisbon has its own Documentation and Archive Centre, there is an Overseas Historical Archive, and of course the famous National Archive of Torre do Tombo. However, I went to see the Photographic Archive, Arquivo Fotográfico, part of the Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa, in the lively and up-coming neighborhood of Mouraria.

Formally established in 1942, after successive changes of premises, so it says on the website, it was definitively installed in 1994 at number 246, Rua da Palma, a building specially adapted to receive this cultural equipment. It contains more than 600,00 photographic items from the City’s administration.

My wife, son and I were greeted by a friendly reception staff and shown to the impressive exhibition rooms. The curated pictures were displayed with a variety of digital interactive installations, hanging-on-the-wall, 19th centuries cameras (to look into, great for the kid!) and good texts.

I will share more vacation archive memories in the weeks to come.

Do you have a memory to share?

Søren Bitsch Christensen, Chair of Section of Local, Municipal and Territorial Archives, ICA.

WEBINAR – THE ARCHIVE AS A DESTINATION

JUNE 21 at 11:00 – 13:00 CET (UK 10-12 / AUS (Melbourne) 18-20 / ISR 13-15)

In this webinar, we will explore an important topic in the field of archives: how to make users feel welcome and accommodated in archival spaces and reading rooms.

Join us as we delve into the ways in which archives can best tailor their physical spaces to meet the needs of users, while also fulfilling the crucial requirements for the protection of archival material. We will explore how archives can showcase their collections to attract audiences, whether through exhibitions or events, or indeed through collaboration with museums, and will also consider the importance of seeking feedback from users to ensure that physical and digital access is optimized.

Our expert panel of speakers from London Metropolitan Archives, Stockholm City Archives and Queensland State Archives will share their insights and experiences, offering practical advice and thought-provoking ideas for how archives can create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all users. After each presentation, we will invite questions from the participants and open the floor for knowledge sharing at the end of the session.

We look forward to your participation in this engaging and informative webinar about how we can build a more user-centered approach to archives. Please sign up to the webinar by contacting Dr. Anette Larner at [email protected] before June 20.

The Webinar will be recorded and published on the SLMT website. “
