CIHEAM is an intergovernmental organisation that brings together 13 Mediterranean Member States in the fields of sustainable agriculture and fisheries, food and nutrition security, and the socio-economic integration of youth and women. Created in 1962, the CIHEAM is a Mediterranean intergovernmental organization which works for improving sustainable agriculture and fisheries, for ensuring food and nutrition security and for developing rural and coastal territories. The organization gathers 13 Member States from both shores of the Mediterranean (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey) and works with several international and regional institutions. Around 170 permanent agents and hundreds of consultants regularly work within the 5 bodies of the Organisation based Bari (Italy), Chania (Greece), Montpellier (France), Paris (France) and Zaragoza (Spain).

Advancing Arab Food and Water Security through Science and Regional Cooperation

On 5 October 2026, in Cairo, the CIHEAM contributed to the launch of the 14th Arab Cultural Development Report, “Food and Water Security in the Arab World: Accumulated Crises and Promising Initiatives”, organised by the مؤسّسة الفكر العربي Arab Thought Foundation in cooperation with the جامعة الدول العربية - League of Arab States

During the dialogue on Arab integration and international cooperation, CIHEAM SG Teodoro Miano emphasised the importance of translating scientific knowledge into effective policies, sustainable investments and locally adapted solutions.

📖 The report also brings together valuable contributions from members of the CIHEAM scientific community, including Mouin Hamzé, scientific co-editor alongside Omar Bizri, as well as Sebastien ABIS, Mohammed Sadiki, Roula Khadra addressing key dimensions of food security, water governance, agricultural transformation and resource efficiency.

Skills, training and innovation are essential to building water resilience in the Mediterranean.

At the EuroMed Water Forum in Rome, CIHEAM brought together Mediterranean experiences and expertise to explore how knowledge, innovation and regional cooperation can help address growing water challenges.

CIHEAM Secretary General Teodoro Miano moderated the high-level panel “One Health, One Water,” highlighting the interconnectedness of human, animal, ecosystem and water health, as well as the need to reduce fragmentation in knowledge and data.

CIHEAM’s dedicated session on “Water Security in the Mediterranean: Connecting Knowledge, Skills and Regional Cooperation” brought together experiences from Morocco, Spain and Tunisia, exploring what works, what doesn’t, and what can be adapted across different contexts.

As Ambassador Luca Sabbatucci and his Deputy Palma D’Ambrosio conclude their mission in Paris, the CIHEAM wishes to express its sincere gratitude for their constant support, friendship and commitment to Mediterranean cooperation.

Over the past years, their engagement has helped strengthen the CIHEAM’s diplomatic and institutional outreach in Paris, opening new opportunities for dialogue and cooperation.

The Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária, IP (INIAV, IP Portugal) in partnership with the Network, is launching an Advanced International Online Training Course on Plant Breeding and Genetics Applications for National Programs.

From 14 October to 10 November 2026 (five online sessions)

Delivered by internationally recognised experts from institutions including the CIHEAM ; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas - ICARDA; International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), CGIAR, Bayer, UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and many others, the programme will cover:

🔹 machine learning

Our Regional Dialogue on "Community-Led Water Resilience" was a great success. Rich and inspiring discussions highlighted a shared conviction: to tackle water scarcity in the Mediterranean, technical solutions must be rooted in local innovation and Nature-Based Solutions. 🌱

7th Arab Water Forum, July 1st, Jeddah 💧🌍

Tomorrow, the CIHEAM will be hosting a high-level Regional Dialogue: "Community-Led Water Resilience: Water Risk Management and Nature-Based Solutions"

In the face of climate change and water scarcity challenges in the Mediterranean and neighboring regions, technical solutions alone are no longer enough. It is urgent to place , , and local actors at the heart of the response!

🎤 On the agenda for our session tomorrow:

🔷The integrated approach to the water-agriculture-food nexus

🔷Sharing concrete experiences on Nature-Based Solutions, digital innovation, and participatory governance.

🔷Strong synergies with the participation of our 4 Institutes, the Arab Water Council (AWC), the Union for the Mediterranean, Berytech, and Planetek Italia.

Its outcomes will contribute to ongoing regional reflections in preparation for the Water Forum, the next , where water-related challenges will feature prominently, as well as future international discussions, including in Antalya and the 2027 World Water Forum, to be hosted by Saudi Arabia.

🌊 How can the restaurant industry become the driving force behind more responsible consumption?

This is the central question that will be addressed during the seminar "The main course of sustainability: the restaurant industry", organized by CIHEAMBari.
This key event is part of the SASPA project ( and in the transition towards ), born from the collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (MASAF). The goal? To enhance the principles of the as a model capable of sustainably connecting the production, distribution, and consumption of our seafood products. 🐟🍽️

On the agenda: discussions among institutions, supply chain operators, and restaurant professionals (including the Italian Federation of Public Establishments FIPE and the Professional Association of Italian Chefs APCI) to define operational proposals and best practices.

The conclusions of this meeting will feed into the upcoming SASPA White Paper, which will gather strategic recommendations to support the transition towards more sustainable food systems! 💡
