Suriname in France

On April 10th 2025 the First Secretary and the Ambassador had a meeting with a delegation of the Senate of the French Republic (senators Micheline Jacques and Jacqueline Eustache-Brinio and team) as preparation for their mission to Suriname between April 16-18 2025. The mission to Suriname aims to establish the facts on the ground, and, to subsequently use that outcome as a stepping stone for further economic(!), cultural, environmental and regional collaboration between Suriname and both European France and French Guiana. The engagement was contextual, illuminating, deepening, and theme-focused. Our exchange highlighted the excellent cooperation and information and vision sharing between the Embassy of Suriname in France and the Embassy of France in Suriname, as well as the issue of connectivity, data sharing, the importance of bridging the language gap, financial risk and compliance and establishing and facilitating more collaboration between Surinamese and French businesses.
We wish the delegation a fruitful mission to Suriname.

There has been an update concerning visiting Suriname for tourism purposes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation wishes to inform you that as of December 15, 2024 (effective starting April 8, 2025), the Multiple Entry Fee will be introduced provisionally for the period of six months, for the citizens of the French Republic and the citizens of Brazil. The price of the Multiple Entry Fee Voucher will be USD 75,- or Euro 75,-. The VFS service fee is USD 8 or EUR 8.

Today there was this follow-up and kick-off meeting of BRED Banque Populaire with regard to their investment inquiry mission to Suriname after many discussions with Suriname's diplomatic mission in Paris.

Een Surinaamse delegatie zal in Parijs aanwezig zijn voor de wereldpremière van de hedendaagse Surinaamse documentaire 'Monikondee' (land van geld) van Lonnie Van Brummelen, Siebren de Haan en regisseur Tolin Alexander, die ontvangen werd op de ambassade om de laatste voorbereidingen te bespreken. De film gaat in première op het 47e internationale festival Cinéma du réel, in de prestigieuze bioscopen aan de linkeroever in Parijs van 22 tot 29 maart 2025.

Met een acteur die als bootsman op de Marowijne rivier werkt, schetst de film het dagelijks leven op deze gedeelde grens tussen Frankrijk en Suriname.

Ambassadeur Nicolas de Lacoste en Erwin Tolin Alexander bespraken initiatieven voor het behoud van cultureel erfgoed in Frankrijk en Suriname, met speciale aandacht voor de buitenwijken en minder begunstigde gebieden. Er werd ook gesproken over de culturele perspectieven die in Moengo en Albina moeten worden ontwikkeld rond de Tembe kunst en uitwisselingen met Frans Guyanese gemeenschappen.

Une délégation surinamaise sera présente à Paris lors de la première mondiale du film documentaire contemporain surinamais « Monikondee » (signifiant pays d'argent) de Lonnie Van Brummelen, Siebren de Haan et le régisseur Tolin Alexander, ce dernier étant reçu à l'ambassade pour évoquer les derniers préparatifs. La première du film aura lieu lors du 47e festival international du Cinéma du réel, dans les prestigieux cinemas de la rive gauche du 22 au 29 mars 2025 à Paris.

Avec un acteur piroguier sur le fleuve Maroni, le film retrace le quotidien de cette frontière commune de la France et du Suriname.

L'ambassadeur Nicolas de Lacoste et Erwin Tolin Alexander ont échangé sur les initiatives de preservation du patromoine culturel en cours en France comme au Suriname, avec un accent spécial sur les banlieues et les quartiers moins favorisés. Les perspectives culturelles à déployer à Moengo ou à Albina autour de l’art Tembe, ainsi que des échanges avec les communautés guyanaises ont également été évoquées.

Suriname in France Cinéma du réel - Festival international du film documentaire

Today the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, Hon. A. Ramdin, was chosen as Secretary General of the Organization of American States.

De hartelijke felicitaties aan minister Albert Ramdin! Vanmorgen is de minister bij acclamatie gekozen tot de nieuwe Secretaris-Generaal van de Organisatie van Amerikaanse Staten (OAS) voor de periode 2025-2030. De OAS is de belangrijkste organisatie van landen op het westelijk halfrond. Minister Ramdin is door Suriname voorgedragen als kandidaat voor deze positie. Het is een grote eer voor Suriname en de CARICOM dat Suriname's kandidaat door een aanzienlijke meerderheid van de lidlanden is ondersteund. Het is voor de eerste keer in de geschiedenis van de OAS dat een vertegenwoordiger van het Caribisch gebied tot Secretaris-Generaal is gekozen.

The Government of Suriname, through its Central Bureau for Citizen Services, is in the process of implementing the law on travel documents and the relevant (pending) state decree(s). This means that soon electronic passports shall be issued. Consequently the passport application process will change and a visit to the embassy for fingerprinting will be required. Please note that the current passport application process will stop after February 27th 2025. For emergency passports, call the consulates first. Consulates are in Paris, Cayenne and St. Laurent du Maroni.

Samenvatting van de drie sessies van de CBAM-conferentie op 12 februari 2025 in Parijs:

1. Lessen uit het eerste jaar van de CBAM-implementatie Hoofdthema: Beoordeling van het eerste jaar van de CBAM-implementatie en het vereenvoudigen van het proces. Belangrijkste punten: Feedback van belanghebbenden benadrukte uitdagingen en stelde verbeteringen voor om het mechanisme te vereenvoudigen. Nadruk op de behoefte aan een duidelijke en vereenvoudigde aanpak om administratieve lasten voor bedrijven en overheden te minimaliseren. Belangrijkste citaat: "Het eerste jaar van de implementatie was een leerervaring, en we moeten samenwerken om het proces te vereenvoudigen en onnodige complexiteit voor bedrijven te voorkomen." 2. Toekomstige ontwikkelingen van CBAM Hoofdthema: Verkenning van potentiële toekomstige uitbreidingen van CBAM, inclusief nieuwe sectoren en het voorkomen van koolstoflekkage. Belangrijkste punten: CBAM kan worden uitgebreid naar meer industrieën, vooral diegene die risico lopen op koolstoflekkage, zoals downstream-sectoren. Overweging van de opname van indirecte emissies en hoe het mechanisme beter om kan gaan met zowel import- als exportgerelateerde koolstoflekkage. Belangrijkste citaat: "We moeten niet alleen Europese industrieën beschermen tegen koolstoflekkage, maar ook verder kijken dan de grenzen om de eerlijkheid van ons klimaatbeleid te waarborgen." 3. Internationale samenwerking op het gebied van koolstofprijsstelling Hoofdthema: Verkenning van wereldwijde samenwerking op het gebied van koolstofprijsstelling en koolstofgrensmaatregelen. Belangrijkste punten: Er werd gefocust op het creëren van internationale allianties ter ondersteuning van koolstofprijsstelling en het voorkomen van handelsverstoringen. Discussies over de ontwikkeling van koolstofmarkten en CBAM-achtige mechanismen in derde landen, zoals het VK en Turkije, werden als essentieel gezien voor wereldwijde afstemming. Belangrijkste citaat: "Een wereldwijde oplossing voor klimaatverandering vereist internationale samenwerking, en de EU staat klaar om met andere landen samen te werken aan een eerlijk en efficiënt koolstofprijsstellingssysteem." Afsluitende verklaring Hoofdthema: De toewijding van Frankrijk en de EU om klimaatverandering aan te pakken, terwijl de concurrentiekracht wordt gewaarborgd. Belangrijkste citaat: "Onze toewijding om koolstoflekkage te verminderen en de ecologische transitie vooruit te helpen is onwrikbaar, maar dit moet op een manier gebeuren die wereldwijde eerlijkheid en concurrentievermogen waarborgt."

The Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty of France (Ministère de l'Économie, des Finances et de la Souveraineté industrielle et numérique) organized on February 12th 2025 a conference on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). On January 30th 2025 we received H.E. Jiřina Valentová, Permanent Delegate of the Czech Republic to UNESCO, at the Embassy promoting the candidacy of the country for the World Heritage Committee 2025-2029. We had a pleasant meeting on this issue as well as a discussion on Suriname’s sites of Outstanding Universal Value and the upcoming technical meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria. To promote the candidacy, we received a detailed document (flyer), CVs of the proposed candidates (CZ nationals), and a magnificent book detailing the twelve (12) sites located in Czechia on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The book includes a detailed description of each site, its history and historical and cultural importance and impact, and wonderful, high-quality pictures.

Le 30 janvier 2025, nous avons reçu Son Excellence Jiřina Valentová, Déléguée Permanente de la République tchèque auprès de l'UNESCO, à l'Ambassade pour promouvoir la candidature du pays au Comité du patrimoine mondial pour la période 2025-2029. Nous avons eu une réunion agréable à ce sujet ainsi qu'une discussion sur les sites du Suriname d'une Valeur Universelle Exceptionnelle et sur la prochaine réunion technique à Sofia, Bulgarie. Pour promouvoir la candidature, nous avons reçu un document détaillé (tract), les CV des candidats proposés (nationaux tchèques) et un magnifique livre détaillant les douze (12) sites situés en République tchèque inscrits sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Le livre inclut une description détaillée de chaque site, son histoire, son importance historique et culturelle, ainsi que de magnifiques photos de haute qualité.
