An extra Β£200,000 has been added to this winter’s budget for gritting roads and pavements in Aberdeen with an anticipated spend of Β£1,774million for the 2026/2027 season.

A report agreed today by councillors at Net Zero, Environment and Transport Committee about the Roads Winter Service Plan said roads and pavements will be prioritised for gritting as the Council cannot be everywhere at once.

Applications for the one-tonne grit bag scheme, which was also agreed at committee, will start next week with more details to follow on ACC social media.

Residents across Aberdeen can apply for a free one-tonne community salt bag from today (Monday 14 September 2026) to treat icy roads and pavements in their neighbourhood during the winter months.
People are advised to apply as soon as possible as it is the same team which fills and delivers the one-tonne community salt bags as which carries out gritting operations.
The deadline for applying for the one-tonne community salt bags is Sunday 25 October 2026 after which applications will not be processed due to the additional demand this places on the service at this busy time of year.
The scheme is designed to help communities help themselves when winter starts and in addition, there will again be big community salt bins in strategic locations around the city.

City residents are reminded to cut back foliage from pavements and roads to ensure people have a clear route - particularly for those in wheelchairs, mobility scooters, using pushchairs, or are elderly or have impaired vision.
Homeowners have a legal responsibility to make sure there are no overhanging trees, hedges and other shrubbery, or plants.
You should take action to cut back foliage if:
β€’ Your hedge/shrub restricts the width of the pavement;
β€’ People are being forced to walk at the edge of the footpath or the road;
β€’ Trees on your land overhang a footpath or road
